joking with the devil a number of times this summer

There's at least one thing in every category this week that looks absolutely terrific! Anora won big at the Oscars last night and while I'm happy for them, I still think The Brutalist is a masterpiece. I was hoping Sean Baker would take Best Director while The Brutalist took Best Picture, but oh well. The only award I felt super strongly about was Adrien Brody winning Best Actorโ€”I was ready to riot if Timothee Chalamet ended up winning over him.

Anyways... on to the wonderful new stuff for the week!

what's new on tv this week

๐Ÿ“บ New Shows

โ˜˜๏ธ Celtics City (HBO) โ€” 3 Mar

A new limited docuseries from the producers of The Last Dance and Bill Simmons about the history of the Boston Celtics. While there's no shot it will compete with The Last Dance, it should be a fun ride given the history the franchise has.

๐Ÿ˜ˆ Daredevil: Born Again S1 (Disney) โ€” 4 Mar

Finally a Marvel show I'm actually excited about. I don't remember how far I got through the Netflix series, maybe two season plus Jessica Jones? But giving this the Born Again moniker and bringing back Charlie Cox makes me feel like it might actually be good. Plus the creators, Matt Corman and Chris Ord, were also behind Covert Affairs back in the day, which was a fun USA show.

๐Ÿฅช Deli Boys S1 (Hulu) โ€” 6 Mar

First new Hulu comedy of the year is about a pair of Pakistani-American brothers who deal with the death of their father, who owned a bunch of convenience stores, only to get pulled into a life of crime. Feels a bit like the Pakistani version of The Gentlemen, but played way more for laughs than just seeing a guy dress up as a chicken.

๐Ÿ’Ž The Righteous Gemstones S4 (HBO) โ€” 9 Mar

And the big one! The fourth and final season of The Righteous Gemstones is upon us. It's top tier Danny McBride and John Goodman and while I know I'm going to miss, I'm going to try to savor every second of this season. It's a pitch perfect, fun comedy that knows exactly what it is and continues to deliver hilarious moments.

๐Ÿ’ฝ Release of the Week

๐Ÿฅ” All Cylinders by Yves Jarvis

A terrific blending of genres here as Jarvis shows us hints of pop, r&b, indie rock, and even some funk and blues in this wonderfully surprising album. The instrumentation and harmonies throughout this album just make me smile. It's a chill record, but it gives me such nostalgic feelsโ€”giving Motown meets Simon & Garfunkel vibes.

Current Favorite Track: Warp and Woof

๐Ÿƒ Runner-ups

๐Ÿด Pony Coughing by Nervous Verbs

A contemplative indie rock record in a tight, 21 minute package. It's the first solo project in Mike Montgomery's 30 year music career, which is surprising because Pony Coughing has a rawness you'd expect from a musician just starting to figure things out, which makes for a delightful experience.

CFT: Vicious Riffs

๐Ÿ—œ๏ธ committed to a bit by corook

A fun, funny, and upbeat alt-pop album from Nashville based multi-hyphenate Corinne Savage. Savage explores a range of topics and utilizes a lot of different sounds throughout to make an album that is anything, but run-of-the-mill pop.

this weeks best comic releases

๐Ÿฆธ No. 1's

๐Ÿ™ˆ Monkey Meat: The Summer Batch (Image)

Juni Ba's anthology series returns! Ba's art and storytelling chopsโ€”as he tackles topical themes given the world around usโ€”are just so much fun. Monkey Meat is the type of series that I hope continues to return every couple of years for as long as Juni Ba is active making comics. So make sure to pick this up and juice the numbers so we can make that a reality.

๐Ÿฆ‹ Mothra: Queen of the Monsters (IDW)

I'm pretty excited for the launch of the new Godzilla universe in a couple of months, but in the meantime, we get this new Mothra mini-series from the wonderful Sophie Campbell and Mark Frank. The cover is gorgeous too so if the interior art looks anything like it, it should be quite the looker.

6๏ธโƒฃ Secret Six (DC)

I don't remember much about it, but I remember having a pretty great affinity for Gail Simone's two runs on Secret Six. This new version is being written by Nicole Maines, who is an actress and transgender activist, and also played one of the characters featured in this book on the CW show, Supergirl. It doesn't look like she's written anything before this, but I really hope it's good.

๐Ÿฐ Usagi Yojimbo: Ten Thousand Plums (Dark Horse)

I also tell myself I'm going to read some Usagi Yojimbo, but never do. Maybe this mini-series will be the day... although I'm the type of person that wants to start from the beginning.

๐Ÿš€ Rick and Morty: Spring Break Out (Oni)

And a new R&M mini-series is here as well...

movies hitting the big screen this week

๐ŸŽฅ New Movies

๐Ÿคนโ€โ™‚๏ธ Mickey 17

The new english-language Bong Joon-ho movie is here! And it's starring Robert Pattinson, who despite his Twilight days, has become a pretty terrific actor with great taste in filmsโ€”or at least whoever is choosing what he does has great taste. This was supposed to come out awhile ago, so the delays and rumors coming out about who has final cut made me a bit nervous, but early reviews are faring really well.

๐Ÿ‘ฐ Seven Veils (Limited)

Amanda Seyfried stars in this new Atom Egoyan drama about a theater director following in her mentors steps while dealing with some repressed trauma. I'm not familiar with Egoyan, but he seems to have quite the body of work in indie dramas with some pretty talented actors.

๐Ÿฆฝ The Rule of Jenny Pen (Limitedโ€”Shudder on 28 March)

John Lithgow and Geoffrey Rush star in James Ashcroft's new psychological thriller about two men and a puppet. Lithgow looks like he is having a ton of fun with this one playing the deranged/psychotic character to Rush's straight man.
