s4e18โ€”slowly going crazy in secret on a ship of snakes

Well hello there.

We didn't publish a Weekend Edition on Friday, but we still did publish a new feature, so go ahead and give that a read if you'd so desire:

๐ŸŒŽ Life in a web browser
When a web browser is all you need

A lot of really great looking stuff this weekโ€”an especially packed week of music to where I felt bad leaving stuff off.

what's new on tv this week

๐Ÿ“บ New Shows

๐Ÿ”Ž Get Millie Back S1 (HBO) โ€” 25 Nov

New HBO show from the novelist Marlon James. This is his first time writing for TV and he is both the writer and creator in this Tamara Lawrance starring mini-series about a detective working a missing persons case in Kingston.

๐Ÿคช The Madness S1 (Netflix) โ€” 28 Nov

Another mini-series that I wouldn't be paying any attention to if it weren't for Colman Domingo who plays a media pundit who stumbles into the middle of a murder caseโ€”and I assume, madness ensues.

๐Ÿ”Ž The Agency S1 (Paramount) โ€” 1 Dec

This is the show I'm most excited for without really knowing much about it. The guys on The Watch podcast have long talked about The Bureau, a French show that was apparently one of the best shows ever. This is the American remake of that and it stars Michael Fassbender, Jeffrey Wright, Richard Gere, and the fantastic Jodie Turner-Smith (Bad Monkey).

last friday's best new albums

๐Ÿ’ฝ Release of the Week

๐ŸŒ Dead Slow by Heavy Moss

I came across these guys because they are on the King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard record label and I found myself pleasantly surprised. It's not the best album of the week, but it's something really worth checking out if you are up for some moody, ethereal indie rock.

๐Ÿฅˆ Best of the Rest

๐Ÿš— GNX by Kendrick Lamar

Should this have been the release of the week? Yeah, but you already know everything you need to know about Kendrick.

โ˜ฎ๏ธ Mahashmashana by Father John Misty

Father John Misty is back with a great album. His last two albums were so-so for me, but I think he is back on track with this one (at least based on my first listen).

๐Ÿ’Œ Nobody Loves You More by Kim Deal

I didn't have any familiarity with Kim Deal, but I read she was a member of The Pixies and fronted The Breeders so I obviously gave this a shot. And I think she made something pretty special. It feels both familiar and fresh at the same time as she paints a pretty personal portrait.

๐Ÿ“ Even More!

this weeks best comic releases

๐Ÿฆธ No. 1's

๐Ÿจ Welcome to the Maynard (Dark Horse)

I'm going to talk about dad's writing for their kids a bit down below being cheesy, but with Maynard, I have hope that they are going to get it right. James Robinson writes this one with very cartoony looking art from J. Bone.

๐Ÿ The Serpent in the Garden (Dark Horse)

Mike Mignola is joined by artist Ben Stenbeck in this From the World of Hellboy book.

๐ŸŒˆ Justice League Unlimited (DC)

DC is All-in with this one as Mark Waid and Dan Mora continue their amazing run of working together now on a full blown JL book that looks like it'll be a center piece of the line for awhile.

๐ŸŽข West Coast Avengers (Marvel)

West Coast Avengers people are the best kind of people and even though the team in this book doesn't feel very WC to me, Gerry Duggan should keep things fun as he is joined by Danny Kim on art, who I'm pretty unfamiliar with overall.

๐Ÿ˜‡ Hornsby & Halo (Ghost Machine // Image)

I'm starting to think the Ghost Machine label isn't really for me. It feels like dad's trying to make comics they can read with their kids while still trying to feel edgy. I still dig Geiger and a few other titles, but even the names of the books just have a cheesy feeling to them now.

๐Ÿ“ Other New Releases

  • Napalm Lullaby (Image) #7
  • Grommets (Image) #6
  • Ultramega (Image) #7
  • Frankenstein (Image) #4
  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (IDW) #4
  • Hello Darkness (Boom) #5
  • Void Rivals (Image) #14
  • Hyde Street (Image) #2
  • Falling in Love on the Path to Hell (Image) #6

movies hitting the big screen this week

๐ŸŽฅ New Movies

๐Ÿ‘น Mononoke The Movie: The Phantom in the Rain

Holy colorful animation. I'm not familiar with the anime series this stems out from, but it looks absolutely stunning and I want to mainline this straight into my veins.

๐ŸŒˆ Queer

Daniel Craig stars in this film directed by Luca Guadagnino (Call Me By Your Name) about a couple American men in a small community in Mexico City.

๐ŸŽธ Heavier Trip

I had no familiarity with Heavy Trip and didn't even know this was a sequel after watching the trailer, but it looks like a ton of fun as a heavy metal band breaks out of jail to play a festival.

๐Ÿชฒ Beatles '64

And of course, the newest Beatles doc on Disney+ has to get a mention.

๐Ÿ“ What Else?

That's a wrap. I'm going to try to use this little holiday break to catch up on the submission queue and make sure these last few weeks of the season are superb.

Be kind and stay sane,
