s5e4—what do drugs, love, and ice cream have in common?
A day late, but I think that's a-okay. We finally have new shows, good music, killer comics, and even a couple movies that might be worth checking out.
This week on foofaraw is going to be a bit of a comics extravaganza as The Outer is back today, Abstract Tears is back Friday, and we have a new comic hitting the feeds tomorrow—so keep your eyes peeled.
Plus, yesterday we published our 2024 Comics wrap-up with the best new and returning comics alongside our most anticipated of 2025.
📺 New Shows
🏖️ Paradise S1 (Hulu) — 28 Jan
Paradise is the new show from Dan Fogelman, creator of This Is Us. He's bringing along Sterling K. Brown for the ride and adding James Marsden and Julianne Nicholson into the fold. However, Paradise is a much different show than This Is Us. Polygon bills it as "part Lost, part 24, and a dash of network TV melodrama."
All in all, it's a murder mystery with some sci-fi elements thrown in where Brown gets to play a kick-ass Secret Service agent. Sounds like it could be fun.
⚔️ Mythic Quest S4 (Apple) — 29 Jan
I feel like some people have soured on Mythic Quest, but I'm still a huge fan. It's no Sunny, but I have a lot more fun with it than I do Ted Lasso.
🫒 Mo S2 (Netflix) — 30 Jan
Season 1 of Mo was incredible. I'm still slacking in regards to catching up on Ramy and Dave, but if you like either of those, you should definitely be going back to check out Mo. It falls in that 30min auteur driven dramedy a la Louie and the aforementioned shows—it's a blast. It feels real in a way a lot of the others don't and presents a culture—along with it's similarities—to the forefront.
💊 Common Side Effects (Adult Swim) — 2 Feb
I'm weirdly excited for this, but also know there is no way my wife sits down to watch it with me... An Adult Swim animated and surreal show about science, healthcare, conspiracies, and capitalism. My hippy cousin is going to love it—I can feel it.

💽 Release of the Week
🔈 LOWER by Benjamin Booker
This was my number one most anticipated album of the year and for the most part, it delivered. There are no huge hits—I don’t think—like his first two albums had, but the whole album is solid, through and through. While it might not have those catchy pop hits, there’s also no skips.
I’m mostly just happy to have his raspy, gravely voice and fuzzy guitar back in my life after a long eight years of no new music.
🏃 Runner-ups
🧂 Salt River by Sam Amidon
Sam Amidon is someone I have zero familiarity, but gave it a shot because of the minimal cover art—he's apparently a Bon Iver collaborator as well. For Salt River, Amidon is joined by percussionist Philippe Melanson and jazz fusion saxophonist and producer Sam Gendel. We are big fans of Gendel's minimalist jazz fusion around these parts so bringing that together with what's billed as folk is a fascinating combo. In the end, it comes across as a chill/lo-fi folk record with some sparse instrumentation and some fiddle thrown in for good measure.
🤟 Love You All Over Again by Tunng
And staying in the world of folk, Tunng, a band I don't have much familiarity with, give us a sonically diverse, quirky, and fun folk record.
📝 What Else?
- Never Exhale by DITZ (via Crucial Tracks)
- The Bad Fire by Mogwai
- EUSEXUA by FKA Twigs
- Heard Noises by Matt Berry
- Burnout Days by Flipturn
🏅 Featured Release
🍨 Ice Cream Man (Image) #43
This is a special issue of Ice Cream Man and you don't need to know anything about the book or have read any prior issues to enjoy it. The entire issue is filled with one-page horror stories from the regular creative team along with a list of A-list guest writers that's a mile long: Grant Morrison, Jeff Lemire, Matt Fraction, Patton Oswalt, and a ton of others. I'm fascinated to see how they pull this off.
🦸 No. 1's
🍂 The Seasons (Image)
This is the first new book of the year I'm genuinely excited about (and it also made my most anticipated list for 2025). Rick Remender is back with a new book that appears to be in the "whimsical horror" camp and he's bringing along the artist from Robert Kirkman's comic-turned-tv show, Paul Azaceta. I've avoided reading much else about it because whenever Remender is involved, I'm in.
🔪 Book of Cutter (Boom)
Another over-sized one-shot in the world of SIKTC/Slaughterverse following 2022's Book of Slaughter and 2023's Book of Butcher. If you've been keeping up with those, this is a no-brainer, if not, it's an easy skip.
🚋 Blood Train (Image)
Image doesn't typically put out a ton of one-shots, but with the new Ninth Circle horror imprint, it looks like we might be getting a few of these into the future. Blood Train is about someone getting turned into a monster from a bioweapon while on a train. Could be fun...
🦅 SilverHawks (Dynamite)
I have zero familiarity with SilverHawks, but with Ed Brisson driving the ship and the success Dynamite found with Declan Shalvey writing ThunderCats, I'm excited to check it out. Super curious to see if they can find similar success here with a lesser known property.
🕵️ Kid Maroon (Vault)
Lastly, Christopher Cantwell (Halt and Catch Fire, Iron Man) and Victor Santos (Paranoia Killer) bring the 1940's comic strip about a hard-boiled kid detective to the modern comics. I don't know anything about this one, but it's definitely a different approach to the typical IP play we see nowadays.

🎥 New Movies
👧 Companion
The feature film directorial debut from writer Drew Hancock and the production team behind Barbarian. Sophie Thatcher (Yellowjackets) stars as an AI robot companion in this dark psychological thriller comedy.
❤️ Love Me
Reviews don't seem great for this one, but boy does it capture a feeling and feel unique. After the end of humanity, a buoy and a satellite fall in love and base their knowledge off of relationships from what humans left behind on the internet, specifically that of a couple played by Kristen Stewart and Steven Yeun.
