s4e13—the new franchise of short eels is stealing your skin for art
In case you don't plan on reading the whole issue or are skipping comics regularly, I want to urge you to at least read the intro about Shortbox Comics Fair, I promise it'll be with your time (if you have a soul).
I was incredibly excited for this show, satirizing the behind-the-scenes of super hero movies from Armando Iannucci (Veep, The Death of Stalin) and Sam Mendes (Jarhead, Skyfall), but early reviews aren't looking too stellar. I'm still a little hopeful despite those reviews, but this is only the beginning of what looks to be a stellar October of TV.
Lots of good stuff this week and even more stuff I didn't get to, but this record stood out the most to me right away. Parts of it are old-timey, parts are vibey, parts are punk rock, and all of it carries a great fuzzy indie rock sound throughout. Add in the female vocals, harmonies and don't give a fuck instrumentation and you end up with something really fun.
Yesterday was jam-packed with new number one's so we are going to zoom through these.
But first! There are tons of comics you can buy digitally this month only at the Shortbox Comics Fair! I'm picking up (at a minimum):
I'm a huge fan of the work Jordan Thomas has done with Shaky Kane, I think he has the potential to be the next Si Spurrier, so I'm excited to see him launch a new sci-fi book with a different artist in Daniel Gete.
A new horror comic set in the Geoff Johns created universe of Ghost Machine. Written by Geoff Johns with art by his frequent collaborator Ivan Reis.
Horror seems to be extremely in right now as even the crime writer extraordinaire, Brian Azzarello (100 Bullets) is getting in on it with this book along with artist Vanesa R. Del Rey.
DC All In and Absolute all kicks off right here. If you are intersted in where DC is going or how the Absolute Universe gets kicked off, this is the place to be.
With the animated show coming to HBO soon as the first release under James Gunn's stewardship, the new Creature Commandos book is here under the DC Horror Presents label from writer (and actor) David Dastmalchian (who has been quite active in these pages lately) and artist Jesús Hervás.
Only including this for the gorgeous Dan Hipp cover.
New solo Storm series for the new wave of X-Men "From the Ashes" from a creative team I am not familiar with: writer Murewa Ayodele and artist Lucas Werneck.
I shared both of these first two movies in Review of Links awhile back, but boy do they look wild. First up, Daaaaaali!, a french film from writer/director Quentin Dupieux that takes a very Dali like approach to making a movie about Dali. I'm not sure how else to describe it other than that, watch the trailer, or check out this tagline from IMDb:
A French journalist meets the iconic surrealist artist Salvador Dalí on several occasions for a documentary project that never came to be.
Another wild, off-the-walls picture—but this one is a horror comedy starring Nick Frost. Dutch filmmakers Flip Van der Kuil and Steffen Haars are behind this kooky Adult Swim-esque thing.
Last and surely least... I already wasn't excited about this (other than the fact I think Joaquin Phoenix is fantastic) and the reviews so far have born that out.
Quick one, but hopefully you find something to check out—especially some Shortbox comics!
Be kind and stay sane,
