everything around me

Back at it with some pretty, pretty great releases. An Alien show, a new Spike Lee joint, indie instrumental jams, and some cemetery kids.
And I know I mentioned it yesterday, but Weapons was really, really, really great. So if you like good, smart, elevated horror, rush to the movies today.

📺 New shows
👽 Alien: Earth (FX/Hulu) — 12 Aug
Feel like I’ve been waiting for this show for ages! I’m not sure I will get my wife to watch it, so I might have to carve out some time during the day to watch this, but Noah Hawley (Legion, Fargo) can do no wrong in my book. Between Dan Trachtenberg running the world of Predator and Fede Álvarez and Noah Hawley on Alien, the future is bright.
🌭 Sausage Party: Foodtopia S2 (Amazon) — 13 Aug
Season one was fine.
🌧️ The Rainmaker S1 (USA) — 15 Aug
I grew up addicted to the USA blue sky shows like Monk, Psych, Royal Pains, Suits, White Collar, etc. (I can go on and on and on). It appears USA is back making some interesting-looking TV following that same roadmap here.

💽 Release of the week
💌 Harry Garth Jones Presents Music for Love by Mattias Uneback
Some indie-alternative instrumental music that moves and grooves and jazzes all over the place. It’s an absolute delight if you’re the type of person who is okay with instrumental music.

🏃 Runner-ups
🧌 ABOMINATION REVEALED AT LAST by Thee Oh Sees
King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard meets black midi in all the right ways. Maybe even some GWAR-type heavy metal antics at times for good measure. It’s a fun and raucous rock album all the way through.
🕔 Danger in Fives by Wombo
The dissonance of sounds on this album is fascinating and delightful—subtle dream pop vocals with fuzzy indie rock instrumentation.
📝 What else?
- Magic of the Sale by Teethe
- Spin the Wheel by Lloyd and the Leftovers
- Surrender Instead by Field Medic
I listened to both The Black Keys and The California Honeydrops. Neither is worth listening to, unfortunately. But you know, if you have bad taste, go ahead and do you.

🦸 No. 1’s
🪦 Cemetery Kids Run Rabid (Oni)
The newest Cemetery Kids mini-series from Zac Thompson and Daniel Irizarri. I haven’t gotten around to reading the first mini-series Cemetery Kids Don’t Die, but this has been on my radar to check out for a while, so seeing the follow-up coming out is fun.
👻 Space Ghost (Dynamite)
A new number one issue for Space Ghost after they had a #1 last year...

🎥 New movies
⚔️ Highest 2 Lowest
The newest joint from Spike Lee and Denzel Washington is here. It’s a reinvention of the Kurosawa film High to Low for the modern age, set in New York. It also features ASAP Rocky, who is in two pivotal films this year. While it hits theaters this week, it will also hit Apple TV+ in a month.
🐶 Fixed (Netflix)
Fixed is Genndy Tartakovsky’s newest movie (Samurai Jack, Primal, Dexter’s Laboratory, Hotel Transylvania). It’s an R-rated animated comedy about a dog who learns he will get fixed in a day and wants to have one more wild night with his buddies.

👊 Nobody 2
This is the sequel to Bob Odenkirk’s action star movie (which I never got around to seeing, but I am still interested in).
🇺🇸 Americana
Jeans or genes? Does it matter? I don’t know. This is the latest Sydney Sweeney vehicle from writer/director Tony Tost. It also features Paul Walter Hauser and Halsey. What’s more Americana than jeans?
🌃 Night Always Comes (Netflix)
Netflix movies tend to be more misses than hits for me, but Vanessa Kirby and Jennifer Jason Leigh are an excellent pairing for a film.
📝 What else?
- East of Wall (Limited)
- Red Sonja (Limited)
