πŸ“Ί The Media Guide S5E12

aliens, unicorns, and the mafia

Another killer week for TV and comics! Seth Rogen, Matthew Rosenberg, Tom Hardy, Tyler Boss, Jim Lee, Pierce Brosnan, Helen Miren, Garth Ennis! The list goes on and on and on.

Despite all that wonderfulness, I'm once again a bit lazy with the music releases, please forgive me...

what's new on tv this week

πŸ“Ί New Shows

βš”οΈ Side Quest (Apple) β€” 25 Mar

A new little four episode mini-series from the folks who make Mythic Quest doing little vignette anthologies around side characters backgrounds similar to what they've done with an episode every season with A Dark Quiet Death in S1 or Backstory! in S2.

πŸŽ₯ The Studio (Apple) β€” 25 Mar

Seth Rogen leads a stacked cast (and a bunch of cameos) as the head of a movie studio trying to balance the corporate needs vs the creative ambitions of making good movies. This is the show I'm most excited about this week, which says a lot because I think all three of threes are interesting on paperβ€”I just really hope they are able to deliver on this one because it's really everything I want in a showβ€”on paper.

πŸ”« MobLand (Paramount) β€” 30 Mar

Ronan Bennett is on a role. He is the creator of The Day of the Jackal on Peacock and now MobLand on Paramount. And he's brought in the overly active Guy Ritchie as a producer and director. Tom Hardy, who I always love on screen, even when he's playing a whacky role in Venom, leads this along with Pierce Brosnan and Helen Miren.

πŸ’½ Some Good Releases

this weeks best comic releases

🦸 No. 1's

🦹 We're Taking Everyone Down with Us (Image)

One of my most anticipated books of the year from 1/2 of What's the Furthest Place From Here? writer Matthew Rosenberg. He's teaming up with artist Stefano Landini for this one about a girl and her robot who are looking to get revenge for the murder of her mad-scientist father. I am absolutely stoked for this one.

✍️ You'll Do Bad Things (Image)

Another one of my most anticipated books of the year from the other 1/2 of What's the Furthest Place From Here?, Tyler Boss, but this time he's writing and he's paired up with a relatively new artist, Adriano Turtulici, in this story about an author trying to write a story with a happy ending, but inevitably kills all his characters only to see them die in real life.

πŸ‘½ Absolute Martian Manhunter (DC)

Deniz Camp isn't a writer I've followed super closely, but I'm beyond excited for this super psychedelic book with artist Javier Rodriguez.

🚸 Kids (Image)

Garth Ennis' first book through the new Ninth Circle imprint and he is joined by Dalibor Talajic for this horror story about disappearing kids, scary creatures, and hyper-violent people.

πŸ¦‡ Batman #158: Hush 2 (DC)

Jeff Loeb and Jim Lee are back on Batman with the sequel to Hush. I know this is probably what most people are most excited for this week, but it's meh for me.

🧌 The Mummy [Universal Monsters] (Skybound)

Skybound has been killing it with these Universal books and while I don't know much about Faith Erin Hicks, I have faith they can kill it again here.

πŸͺ’ Free for All (Oni)

Oni is republishing Patrick Horvath's first book after the huge success of Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees.

πŸ“ What Else?

  • The Lucky Devils (Image) #3
  • The Seasons (Image) #3
  • The Department of Truth (Image) #29
  • Falling in Love on the Path to Hell (Image) #7
  • Absolute Wonder Woman (DC) #6
  • Standstill (Image) #8
  • Nights (Image) #14
  • Monstress (Image) #56
  • Metamorpho (DC) #4
  • Long Cold Winter (Mad Cave) #4

movies hitting the big screen this week

πŸŽ₯ New Movies

πŸ¦„ Death of a Unicorn

This movie keeps getting ripped pretty badly, but I can't help but still want to see it. I love the A24 branding for it, it has such a fun premise, and stars Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega. So many fun pieces coming together, which makes it so sad that they weren't able to pull all the pieces together to make something good.

πŸ§‘β€πŸ€β€πŸ§‘ The Friend

A new drama starring Naomi Watts, Bill Murray, and a giant dog named Apollo based on a novel by Sigrid Nunez.
