s5e1—what's more american than serial killers

Well hello there, long time no see. Those three weeks flew by and I've unfortunately been sick for the last twelve days...

I have quite the ambitious plan for S5 and the week ahead is a doozy, but given I still have this massive headache, I'm going to leave things there. Things tend to be pretty light to start the year anyways.

what's new on tv this week

📺 New Shows

🥼 The Pitt S1 (HBO) — 9 Jan

A new hospital procedural starring Noah Wyle in the mold of ER as "Max" continues the regression of the HBO brand to be everything to everyone. While there is still a chance this is better than your average medical show given the pedigree of HBO, it's screaming out bust to me. Still going to give it a shot though.

🐂 American Primeval S1 (Netflix) — 9 Dec

Surprisingly, Netflix has the prestige show of the week with this western drama set in 1857. Betty Gilpin, Taylor Kitsch, Dane DeHaan, Shea Whigham, and Saura Lightfoot Leon (if you are watching The Agency, you'll recognize her) star here as everyone tries to survive in the brutal lands of America. This show comes from Mark L. Smith, who wrote the screenplay for The Revenant, and all six episodes directed by Peter Berg (Deepwater Horizon, Friday Night Lights).

💽 Release of the Week

🐛 Bugs Forever by Gumshoes

Well, it doesn't take much to be the release of the week given this was the only full length album I came across worth mentioning.

Either way, Bugs Forever is a fun British chamber pop / indie rock record that's pleasant enough to listen to with a fruity cocktail in hand. My wife hates it and thinks it sounds like a theme song for a sitcom, but her taste is questionable.

this weeks best comic releases

🦸 No. 1's

😈 The Lucky Devils (Image)

The most anticipated book of the year so far comes from the magical midwestern duo behind Eight Billion Genies and Curse Words, Charles Soule and Ryan Browne. Lucky Devils looks like their take on Good Omens as two devils try to revolutionize hell. I assume hilarity ensues quite quickly given the creative team.

🪦 Death of Copra (Image)

Copra is one of those books I've wanted to check out forever, but have been too daunted too start. Death of Copra is a four issue finale from Michel Fiffe to bring the story to it's ultimate conclusion.

👑 Cruel Kingdom (Oni)

Another new anthology series from Oni's EC Comics line. Cruel Kingdom is their take on Dark Fantasy and features work from Al Ewing, Chris Condon, Greg Pak, Kano, and more.

😱 Those Not Afraid (Dark Horse)

And lastly, foofaraw favorite, Kyle Starks, is back with a horror book alongside artist Patrick Piazzalunga. This one features the dark premise of two serial killers in the same city competing to see who can top the state record for kills first.

📝 What Else?

  • What's the Furthest Place From Here? (Image) #21
  • Napalm Lullaby (Image) #8
  • Where Monsters Lie: Cull-De-Sac (Dark Horse) #3

  • Transformers (Skybound) #16
  • Living Hell (Dark Horse) #2

movies hitting the big screen this week

🎥 New Movies

⏱️ Timestalker

New film written and directed by and starring Alice Lowe look quite interesting. It has some light Groundhog Day vibes as she get reincarnated every time she makes the same mistake of falling in love with the wrong man..

🎟️ The Last Showgirl & Hard Truths

We touched on both of these already when they went into limited release, but both are going wide this Friday.
