🪨 Swedish green crush
by Richard Zaric
a beckoning call and clicking claws
Chunks of wood from a shipwreck strewn about the shore didn’t come as a surprise as they finally set foot on land. Their ship had only miraculously avoided crushing into the rocks surrounding the island. However, James’s hazy mind wouldn’t let him remember why they had risked sailing into this bay in the first place.
A movement caught his eye, and he realized with terror that the ground was swarming with crabs, feasting on dozens of dead bodies washed ashore. His stomach turned, and he bent over, resting his hands on his thighs, certain he was going to be sick.
A few of the little beings scampered closer, clicking their claws as if expecting to have a taste of his flesh next. James straightened up immediately, angrily stomping his feet to scare them away.
And then he heard it again—a myriad of the most beautiful voices joined in a heavenly song—the reason they couldn’t help but sail off course. His eyes darted in the direction of the sweet sound. Out in the distance, between sharp rocks and splashing waves, he spotted them. With their long hair covering their naked breasts, and brightly colored fish scales on their tails reflecting the sun. They were the most magnificent creatures he had ever seen, and they were beckoning to him.
Everything else forgotten, James let his legs carry him toward their call. He took no notice of the absent faces on his fellow crew members as they stumbled along, nor the line of crabs that hurried after them, clicking their claws enthusiastically.
