Ahoy friends! Hope you enjoyed your Labor Day weekend. My wife enjoyed her long birthday weekend and I've got my mom and some family coming down to wine country this week... so it'll be a long one... 😜
But...
Sonic Vibrations is back! I realized if I didn't include it here, I wouldn't push myself to get it out as it's own thing on a consistent basis. And since I missed last week, we've got a double feature of wonderful post-punk goodness to deliver straight into your earholes.
So on with it!
One of the most consistent shows is back once again. I said it before and I'll say it again, I hope they just keep pumping these out. It's always a delight to see Gary Oldman as a curmudgeonly old man.
I wasn't really expecting much out of this, but oh boy, what a cast. Sam Jackson, Don Cheadle, Taraji P. Henson, Terrence Howard, and Kevin Hart. Need I say more?
One of my favorite indie releases in a long time. There's a "don't care" attitude throughout this record with silly—even satirical at times—lyrics along with grizzled riffs. It's hard to call this straight "punk" because of the lightness, but that's exactly what this is with the rough and scratchy instruments, the yell-singing and added punk harmonies. Plus the lyrics and the structures of the songs very much follow the simple tried and true punk format. It's a fun, delightful record through and through. Some of my personal favorite tracks: Pop Single, We Don't Care About That, and Better Than Good.
Well... last week's pick isn't that different than this weeks... I guess I've just been in a post-punk mood lately. Fake Fruit doesn't so much follow the simplicity of the punk song structure, but they bring the noise and boy do they bring the pace. It's also a bit more self-serious while still "not giving a fuck." Overall, a joy.
It was hard not to make this last weeks pick. It's the whole package from their name "Little Hag" (they are new to me) to the album title and cover, to the opening track throwing me waaay off on what the album would be. But it ultimately settles down into a fantastic punk-rock record.
Tycho is Tycho. It's always enjoyable if you like this kind of thing.
This was the first album from last week that made my ears perk up a bit. It wasn't a complete package and got a bit too synthy for my tastes, but there's a nice blend of The Stokes meets ALEXSUCKS throughout.
There weren't a ton of albums that struck a chord with me this week, but this was decent. It's steady run-of-the-mill rock with some fun lyrics and licks.
I wasn't really sure what to expect with this one. The band name is a little off-putting in a weird way, but it's a lot less poppy and rock alt-pop than I expected.
I've been looking forward to this book since Jeff Lemire announced it on his Substack. Every book Lemire writes and draws is pure bliss. Sweet Tooth was one of the first creator-owned books I read from issue one when I started getting back into comics (along with Chew) and I've been a ride or die fan ever since. This is going to be his first long on-going that he writes and draws since Sweet Tooth and I can't wait to see what he does across a long narrative story again.
The third of the the three From the Ashes launch books is finally here. I don't know anything about the creative team of Eve L. Ewing and Carmen Carnero, but it looks to be pretty cool. If you're an X-Men fan, you'll probably want to pick this one up.
Another blockbuster cast in this Netflix drama. Carrie Coon, Natasha Lyonne, and Elizabeth Olsen. Again, do you really need to know more than those three names to be intruiged? It's written and directed by Azazel Jacobs. And while it hits theaters this weekend, you can catch it on Netflix September 20.
Peter Dinklage and Juliette Lewis star in this western crime drama based on the novel by Joe R. Lansdale. And coming from Tubi...? Think it'll hit the streamer on Sept 24 after a quick theatrical release.
Whoah nelly, some good stuff there, aye?
I've been writing about a new print-only newsletter I'm working on over on Mastodon. It's not quite ready, but I released a test issue as a PDF because I was too excited not to put something out there. Still figuring out some of the details, but I'd love to know your thoughts.
