I’m a bit scared to ask… but gone through any rough breakups lately?
No, (I’ve actually been happily married for about 5 years now), but if you read any of my stories, you’ll notice that I do have a (small) obsession with doomed relationships. I’m intrigued by people who stay in relationships that are doomed to fail and end up having big dramatic break-ups because of it. I also love writing stories that are strangely formatted, so the premise of a tear away horoscope intrigued me.
Or have you ever been on the other end and had an ex go a little off the hinges?
I have not to the extent in the story, but I have had few friendships that have ended with a bang. In retrospect, those relationships were probably unrequited lover-friendships where we both had feelings but weren’t willing to admit it.
What’s your sign? Do you think it fits you?
I’m an aquarius. Not sure if it fits me! Some people say it does, and some people say it doesn’t. However, I find it quite frustrating that aquarius is an air sign and not a water sign.
Do you believe in astrology? Tarot?
I use tarot cards for writing inspiration, but don’t believe in them or astrology. However, I have quite a few friends that love tarot cards and oracle cards, so it is an active part of my life even if I don’t believe in it myself.
Have you ever slashed someone’s tires before?
No, but I loved the song “Before He Cheats” by Carrie Underwood as a child. There’s a fun tire slashing scene (and car wrecking scene) in the music video.
How many times has this story been rejected by other markets?
This story was rejected 29 times before it was accepted by you (thank you!). It’s funny, when I wrote this story many years ago, I thought it was a very original idea, but the first editor who rejected it said she liked it but had just received three other horoscope stories that week so could only take one. I refused to give up on it though and now it’s found a home! As a writer, it’s a great feeling when someone backs a story that has been making the rounds for a while (I started submitting this story back in June of 2023).
What’s a great short story you’ve read recently?
Tia Tashiro has been my recent short story obsession of mine. I really loved her story “When Eve Chose Us” which features a person joining the hivemind.
What book are you reading right now?
Right now, I’m reading A Desolation Called Peace by Arkady Martine. I’ve really been enjoying the worldbuilding. As someone who struggles to write longer pieces, I truly admire people who can write compelling long stories.
Do you have anything else you’d like to share?
Don’t slash anyone’s tires!
