the final note from Jack
π Around the world in 2024
It's been quite a year, has it not? Nearly everything about my tools and systems has changed. Then, in many cases, it changed back again. The song is on repeat, but I love it.
You won't be surprised to hear I've done a complete 180β since last month's foray into using nothing but a web browser. Most things aren't actually better when using a browser. They might be good enough, but is "good enough" all we're striving for?
Right now most things are done using Emacs, Tinderbox, and OmniFocus.
Software is fun. Playing with different software is fun, even if it might be wildly unproductive. I don't care, I still love tinkering.
Heading into 2025, I'd like to focus on using simple, reliable tools. My definition of simple and reliable is atypical, I think. For example, I consider Emacs to be simple and reliable, even though it's often neither of those things. But I've used it for more than a decade, and know where the edges are. Most of my "stuff" is there. Emacs is always comfortable, even when it's not the appropriate attire for the occasion.
My blog is still running Hugo for nowβeven if I'm a bit twitchy about it. I'll probably take another crack at using Eleventy or something like it soon.
Digital tools are amazing, but I've also been spending a lot of my time writing in paper notebooks. Paper is a "calm technology" and I'm looking forward to more of that.
With this issue, we're wrapping up the series. I love tinkering, and it's been a pleasure writing about it here at foofaraw. I hope you all have a fantastic 2025. '
See you around!
