🎙️ slow down you are out of control

s3e23—the season three finale with lots of microphones, fantasies, death, destruction, and feelings

Oi! I feel like I'm getting worse at this as time goes on! I completely forgot to include James' latest Sandbox Victory column in last Monday's Media Guide and then again in the Weekend Edition!

Well here it is! Make sure to go check it out; there's tons of awesome stuff in there covering all the new and exciting stuff in games last month.

🕹️ Busting Through the Floor
Hades in early access, an (unofficial) Pokémon roguelike, and a big, new release from Supercell

This is also the S3 finale of The Media Guide. We'll be back with one more Weekend Edition this Friday before taking a three week to recharge the batteries and hopefully watch some NBA Finals games (assuming the Mavs don't get swept...)

Since we are going to be gone for three weeks, I didn't want to leave you all in the lurk for what's coming out during that time. Each section below has a little off-season feature to give you a heads up on the big things coming. Especially The Bear S3!!! (Couldn't help but feature Carm in the header image since we will be on our off-season break when it releases...)

Appreciate everyone who has stuck around or joined during S3. If you have any suggestions for ways to improve this little letter, let me know! Still playing with the idea of including a podcast version in S4 (likely behind the paywall until I get over the fear of hearing my own voice...)

Anyways... enough blabbering...

what's on tv this week

📺 New Shows

🧑‍⚖️ Presumed Innocent S1 (Apple) — 12 June

I've been one of the biggest defenders of Apple's TV productions, but this year they have really been on a downward spiral and I don't actually see that getting better here. Still... I have to give it a shot with Jake Gyllenhal leading this one.

🎙️ My Next Guest S5 (Netflix) — 12 June

Assuming that ends up being disappointing, we can jump over to the two episode season of David Letterman's talk show where he first sits down with Charles Barkley followed by Miley Cyrus.

🎤 Dropout Presents S1 (Dropout) — 12 June

Staying in that lane of people on stage, Dropout drops the first episode of their new Dropout Presents series where there'll be stand-up, improv, and other kinds of weird shit on stage. I love that they are giving this a go, but the first trailer doesn't have me sold on S1. Hank Green is nice, but... stand-up...?

🦹 The Boys S4 (Amazon) — 14 June

Moving on to the main course! It's finally time to sign up for Amazon Prime again! The Boys are back in town (sorry...) My wife and I have been holding off on all Amazon shows to binge while we sign up for The Boys. It's also great to see Eric Kripke be explicit about the influence of fascism and that they will be wrapping up the show with S5.

🐉 House of the Dragon S2 (HBO) — 16 June

HBO is not one to be outdone by Amazon and have the return of their Thrones show on Sunday. I'm hoping now that they don't have to do a time jump in the middle of the season, they can have a more cohesive show that hits the ground running.

this past Friday's best album releases

💽 Release of the Week

🪿 Gúfigis by Goofy Geese

If anyone thinks this album doesn't deserve to be the release of the week soley based on the name of the album, you're an idiot. I mean come on!

This is the debut album from Norwegian bedroom pop duo Goofy Geese and it just feels good. If you imagine what the colors of the album cover would sound like, it's probably this record. Summer-y, light, easy with some delightful instrumentation that might completely encompass your ears if you let it.

🏃 Runner-ups

🥕 Carrot On Strings by Man Man

An upbeat indie pop/art rock record that keeps you guessing the whole way through. It has a little bit of that British late 90's alternative rock vibe going on that fits nicely and contrasts against the more jolly parts quite well.

🏚️ Lived Here For a While by Good Looks

Now it's time to get down with the real indie rock vibes that you know and love to hear about from foofaraw. It's got a tiny bit of folkiness to the guitars at times, some might even call it Heartland Rock, I guess? Mix Heartland Rock and Midwest Emo and I think we might be on to something here.

Benzene by French Cassettes

And finally, another vibey indie pop-rock record that isn't quite "summery" but I feel like when you start to feel the seasons change over to Fall, it'd be perfect.

this weeks best comic releases

🦸 No. 1's

👯‍♂️ Rifters (Image)

Brian Posehn (Just Shoot Me! actor) and Joe Trohman (Fall Out Boy guitarist) are writing another book together (The Holy Roller, previously), this time without Rick Remender. Chris Johnson, who I'm not super familiar with, is on art duties. I tried reading the blurb for this, but there is just so much going on and so many references... should be a wild ride.

👽 Remote Space (Image)

Cliff Rathburn is taking a big swing with this miniseries. It's set in the far future where humans have diverged into two separate evolutionary species. The cover looks gorgeous as hell, which (sadly) is enough to get me to cough up my money.

💀 Plastic: Death & Dolls (Image)

Writer Doug Wagner and artist Daniel Hillyard have been doing some really cool books with Plastic, Plush, and Vinyl, and now they are back with the follow-up mini-series to Plastic. It's always cool to find a creative team that gels together that you can continue to read for years and years.

⚱️ Into the Unbeing (Dark Horse)

Zac Thompson has been putting book after book out lately and this is his newest. This time around he is joined by Hayden Sherman for this climate horror book. I'm not sure how I feel about the topic here, as it sounds super depressing, but I bet it'll be beautiful.

☢️ Gotham by Gaslight - The Kryptonian Age (DC)

Andy Diggle and Leandro Fernández kick off the relaunch of Elseworld with their sequel to the original Gotham by Gaslight. DC has basically been doing Elseworld stuff for awhile already without calling it that, but anything Batman or Gotham and I'm in.

🦹 New Releases

🧨 Napalm Lullaby (Image) #4

Every time I get to this section I feel like I've run out of things to say... it's why I mostly focus on #1's because it's easier to say something new and shed light on something you aren't reading yet. But again, it's Rick Remender and Bengal—you should be reading this.

🎅 The Deviant (Image) #6

Copy and paste the above, but for James Tynion IV and Josh Hixson. Just beautiful stuff. And it's reached the halfway point.

🎑 Ultimate X-Men (Marvel) #4

Once again Peach Momoko is given the reign to do her thing on the leading Ultimate book.

movies hitting the big screen this week

🎥 New Movies

📤 Inside Out 2

The sequel to one of the last new, original Pixar movies that made a huge splash. A couple voice actor switch-ups this time around with Maya Hawke as Anxiety and Ayo Edebiri as Envy as the big new additions.
