oh so ordinary

"the media guide" banner

We've got a jam-packed week with some funny shows, film fest darlings, indie comics, and fuzzy, etheral rock albums.

This week, I've been focused on organizing our first short story contest. There are a ton of awesome contests out there, but I wanted ours to feel like foofaraw. We're soft launching today, so if you're interested in participating, you can grab an early entry for just $3 this week before it goes up to $5 with the official launch. The prompt will be emailed to all participants on October 10th, giving you a little over a week to write and submit your story on October 19th. More details are available below, and we’ll make an official announcement next week.

📺 New shows

🔫 Peacemaker S2 (HBO) — 21 Aug

James Gunn’s acclaimed show returns for its second season. John Cena shines as the sardonic Peacemaker in this comedic superhero series. The main five cast members return, joined by new castmates Michael Rooker, Tim Meadows, and Frank Grillo. Gunn also wrote the entire season and directed three episodes. How does he find the time? No one knows.

🐴 Long Story Short S1 (Netflix) — 22 Aug

The newest animated show from the creator of BoJack Horseman, Raphael Bob-Waksberg. It appears to be a very different show, while keeping the whole “dysfunctional” theme.

🪢 Hostage S1 (Netflix) — 20 Aug

I don’t know anything about this show, but it’s giving some similar vibes to Bodyguard and maybe a little bit of The Diplomat.

💽 Release of the week

🏊 Easier Said Than Done by Pool Kids

This was a tough week because I thought a lot of these albums were great. Easier Said Than Done reminded me a bit of last week's Danger in Fives by Wombo with the ethereal vocals over fuzzy, indie rock instrumentation, but just elevated enough to really hit that sweet spot.

🏃 Runner-ups

😁 Happy Faces by PLAIINS

The Arctic Monkeys meets ALEXSUCKS indie sleaze. Maybe a little bit of last years Call a Doctor by Girl and Girl. It's a ton of fun, high energy, and a little poppy, which might be a turn off for some folks.

👹 Beast by Witch Post

If Easier Said Than Done was more raw, less polished, and less thought through, it'd probably sound like this. And that's not a knock; it's a ton of fun.

👶 Baby by Dijon

Dijon worked on Bon Iver and Justin Bieber's most recent albums before releasing his sophmore effort this past Friday where he melts soul, pop, and R&B together with some psychadelic and eccentric sounds. It's received incredibly high (and well deserved) scores already from outlets like Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, and Paste.

🦸 No. 1’s

Escape (Image)

The newest on-going book from Rick Remender is here and it feels like a great spiritual companion to The Sacrificers. Daniel Acuña handles art in this painterly war & escape book set in a world of anthropomorphic animals. If you aren't sold on this book already, then you likely know nothing about comics, but this is a great time to get educated.

🛰️ Event Horizon: Dark Descent (IDW)

I fell off the last book Christian Ward wrote, but didn't draw, which is the case again here as Tristan Jones handles art duties. I also don't know anything about the film this is book builds on...

🧙‍♀️ Witch Hazel (Silver Sprocket)

Every book from Silver Sprocket is worth picking up, not only because theor books are awesome, but it's critical to support smaller publishers these days. This is a big 48-page book about a witch-for-hire with "monsters, magic, and mayhem" from Colton Fox and Beige Blum.

🎥 New movies

🤵‍♂️ Lurker

This is the debut film from writer/director Alex Russell, who has put in time working on shows such as The Bear, Beef, Dave, and Interior Chinatown. It has a script that was featured on the Black List in 2020, received a positive reception at Sundance and Berlin film festivals earlier this year before getting aquired by Mubi, and was scored by Kenny Beats.

🖖 Splitsville

Writing duo Michael Angelo Covino and Kyle Marvin have written and starred in a few low budget films and shorts, but this is their first big studio movie where they are joined on screen by Dakota Johnson and Adria Arjona. It premiered at Cannes this summer to positive reviews. It will expand to a wide release September 5th.

👯‍♀️ Honey Don’t!

The second movie in Ethan Coen and Tricia Cooke's lesbian B-movie trilogy with Margaret Qualley in the lead once again. Aubrey Plaza, Chris Evans, and Charlie Day are also featured, although early reviews aren't looking too hot.
