they only started the war; why should they go out to fight?
Hello hello hello on this wonderful Monday evening!
I got a wonderful reply to yesterday's Weekend Edition that has put me, and kept me, in quite the wonderful mood throughout today.
This week we have a great edition with a ton of new music, a new Jason Momoa show, some cool comics, and some smaller indie movies that might have a chance to break through (and of course the new Naked Gun...)
We edit the web from our destination homepage. Weekdays we send an email for link addicts. Foofaraw heds join for 50% off with code HelloFoofaraw.
Jason Momoa is back with another new Apple show after helping launch the streaming service with See. He is also a creator on the show and has writing and directing credits for the first time since 2014's Road to Paloma. In Chief of War Momoa plays the warrior Ka'iana who attempts to bring the four warring kingdoms of Hawaii together before outside forces bring their own problems.
This is the newest animated mini-series from Disney/Marvel, with a focus on Wakandan warriors throughout history and the globe-trotting missions they go on.
I haven't watched anything related to WWE since I was in elementary school (I think). But the idea of doing a behind-the-scenes docuseries like the F1 one is super interesting to me. Getting to see how the sausage is made is a really cool idea.
Admittedly not my usual fare, but I had a lot of fun with this one. This feels like a mix of Fiona Apple and Nico (from The Velvet Underground) with a little bit of extra folksiness and talkiness to give it a really fun and playful vibe all the way through.
Keep the talkiness from the last album, take it even further, and then go punk. This is much more in my lane with the crank wave style of music of Squid, black midi, etc. but toned down a bit.
Then we have a fuzzy indie rock record that's a lot of fun. Reminds me a bit of Japandroids, but less raw and fuzzy.
Coming from a new-to-me creative team of writer EE Zann and artist Goddard comes a really, really, cool looking book that's billed as 300 meets Birman, which, yes please. I love me some magical realism so color me intrigued for this one.
Garth Ennis and Becky Cloonan team up for a dark story of nuclear war. This was previously published in the anthology pages of Hello Darkness, but is now coming together in three issues on it's own.
Body horror is absolutely not my thing (Substance was too much for me), so I'm still not sure if I'll actually check this out, but there has been enough buzz about it that I'm considering it. Real life couple, Alison Brie and Dave Franco star in this supernatural horror flick from writer director Michael Shanks.
My wife and I have been watching Veep so seeing Tony Hale right now in this film looks like a ton of fun. This looks a bit like that Harold and the purple crayon movie meets Eric, but actually good and enjoyable.
And then there's Liam Neeson in the new The Naked Gun. Neeson is some truly inspired casting for this. If they would have tried to find the next Leslie Nielsen, I think it would've floppedβNeeson is the perfect antidote to the remake/sequel/prequel hell we are inβif we are going to keep making them. Plus having Akiva Schaffer (of The Lonely Island and director of Hot Rod and Popstar) is exactly the kind of comedic voice we need for this.
