too many murder related things coming out lately
an issue full of love and death and death and love
And we are back. Things are a little bit lighter than last week, but there's still plenty to talk about and look forward to.
We also published our final look back of 2024 going over the best movies of the year and our most anticipated for 2025. You can check out the previous editions for shows, albums, and comics too.
You can also check out our top ten movies (w/o commentary and most anticipated) below in the Silver Screen Voyage section.
I'm not sure this one will be for me, but I'm a big fan of Kaitlyn Dever and while I know it definitely won't be as weird as Brand New Cherry Flavor, I'm hoping it might have a chance to fill a similar role.
And the animated show based on the Robert Kirkman/Ryan Ottley comic is here just in time for them to roll out their new comic shortly. I'm still behind due to not subscribing to Amazon, but one of these days I'll catch up.
While I was a bit disappointed in some of Ty Segall's more recent music, I am digging this new band he formed with Corey Madden. There's some psychedelic rock mixed with nostalgia from the early aughts.
Current Favorite Track: I Don't Know What I Need
Another one where I didn't love their last effort with Never Going Under, but with Death & Love, everything feels much more fluid and light. It's a nice, easy indie post-brit powerpop.
CFT: Like You Did Before
Then getting even more poppy, this record from Charlie Houston is killer. I'm surprised more people aren't talking about this wonderful indie bedroom pop album. Vocals are top notch, as is the instrumentation, especially considering it leans heavier into the pop then I tend to listen to.
CFT: Stupid Love
I actually mentioned this in the second issue of S5 earlier this year and noted how it felt like I've been seeing images of Robot Tod for ages already. Well, apparently there was a delay, and it's supposed to be coming out now...
Mike Mignola, Christopher Golden, Tom Sniegoski, and artist Peter Bergting bring us the newest book in the world of Hellboy, exploring the new world with Frankenstein.
I'm excited about this movie for one reason and one reason only. Cazzie David (daughter of Larry) is the co-writer/co-director on this. I only really know Cazzie's work from writing for Air Mail and showing up as a character in The Umbrella Academy, but she has a strong voice and even if this one doesn't hit, I think she's gotta a future in the biz.
This is the first film Ke Huy Quan is starring in since winning the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor in Everything Everywhere All at Once and he returns to the screen with a director making their feature debut and a writing team with limited experience. Overall, I don't imagine this makes a huge splash, but it should be a fun action comedy leading up to valentines day.
Parthenope is an Italian coming-of-age story from Oscar winning writer/director Paolo Sorrentino and starring Celeste Dalla Porta as the titular Parthenope.
