on your mark, get set...

Welcome back all! I hope you had an absolutely delightful weekend. I spent mine in Chicago enjoying beer and time with family, but I'm back in California now and ready to get things going. And we have not one, but two shows set in Chicago premiering this week! The Bear, of course, is returning for it's fourth season, but Ironheart comes to Disney+, featuring the city of Chicago as well.
This is the last week of season five of Foofaraw, but because I'm poor at planning, we aren't taking any time off at all in between seasons this time!

📺 New shows
🐻 The Bear S4 (Hulu) — 25 June
Last season left a lot to be desired with it's pacing, but they set-up a lot of pins to be knocked down for this coming season. Hopefully they can deliver. This was originally supposed to be the last season, but it sounds like they might be open to a fifth or sixth season depending on where the story takes them. As long as they have a plan, I wouldn't mind at all as the first two seasons are some of my favorite tv in a long time.
💨 Smoke S1 (Apple) — 26 June
The creative team of Taron Egerton, Dennis Lehane, and Richard Plepler—from Black Bird—are back together again for another Apple TV moody, mystery drama. Black Bird was severely overlooked when it came out and I have a feeling the same is going to happen here. Quality TV that just isn't splashy so it doesn't make the big headlines like some of the other shows. Still, these shows feel like they would be right at home on HBO, which makes sense given Richard Plepler's involvement.
🤖 Ironheart S1 (Disney) — 24 June
I don't think Marvel did an especially great job introducing Ironheart in the second Black Panther movie, but I'm still curious to see how they tackle this character in a six episode series. Plus it's set and shot in Chicago, which has me excited to see how they portray and incorporate the city.
🦑 Squid Game S3 (Netflix) — 27 June
Then there's Squid Game, a show that I still haven't checked out...

💽 Release of the week
🛝 God Park by Water Machine
Honestly... not a great week of music... There were definitely some interesting albums, but not very many that delivered from start to finish. But God Park by Water Machine brought a fun, raw energy that made for some real enjoyable pop punk listening.

🏃 Runner-ups
🪞 Face in the Mirror by James and the Cold Gun
James and the Cold Gun are just like baseline average rock to me. They aren't doing anything especially different or exceptional, but it's always enjoyable to throw on and listen to. I might not recognize them when you throw them on, but it's never bad.
🚪 I quit by Haim
And then there is the biggest release of the week, from Haim. I'm not a Haim expert, but this felt very much led by the eldest sister behind the drums. There's a more laidback rock-esuqe vibe—almost veering into raw, at least emotionally—happening here more so than any of their previous efforts, which made for a different experience.

🦸 No. 1's
📰 News from the Fallout (Image)
The newest Image book from writer Chris Condon (That Texas Blood) as he is joined by artist Jeffrey Alan Love to tell a dark sci-fi story about a nuclear test that goes bad and turns everyone "rotten." Condon has a way with gritty storytelling that feels perfect here and if the cover is anything to go by, the art looks creepy and superb.
☠️ Tramps of the Apocalypse (Dark Horse)
This is Alice Darrow's first major book and it looks like a blast. Daughter of Geof Darrow with a career in animation, her first book is about a future where Earth is barren, men rule the world, enslaving women, except for the three Tramps of the Apocalypse who give zero fucks.
🏮 Magick Lantern (Floating World)
New Shakey Kane! This one is political satire as it follows a tech billionaire named Elon Gates who attempts to play God. Sounds about right.
🍂 Lazarus: Fallen (Image)
And then Greg Rucka and Michael Lark return to Lazarus for the last time. I fell off the original series awhile back, but this might be enough reason to hop back on.

🎥 New movies
🏎️ F1: The Movie
Biggest budget movie to-date from Apple—and their last theatrical release—sends Brad Pitt to F1 to help an up-and-coming driver hone their raw skill on the track. I have no doubt it will be an enjoyable time at the movies given the money they put on the screen and the fact Apple has already promised big money to director Joseph Kosinski for his next UFO conspiracy movie.
👶 Sorry, Baby (Limited)
You might recognize Eva Victor as Rian from Billions, but Sorry, Baby is her feature film, which she who wrote, directed, and starred in. Eva plays Agnes, a college professor dealing with the trauma of sexual assault and moving around in the world where things feel different for her, but the world keeps moving for everyone else.
🐎 Ponyboi (Limited)
River Gallo writes and stars in Ponyboi featuring them as the first openly intersex person in a movie. River plays Ponyboi, a sex worker on the run from the mob after a drug deal gone bad. It also features Dylan O'Brien, Victoria Pedretti, and the fantastic Murray Bartlett.
🦹♂️ Stealing Pulp Fiction (Limited)
Lastly, this indie film just looks absolutely hilarious. It's the feature debut for Danny Turkiewicz as he turns the short film he made with Cazzie David into a full length film with Karan Soni, Jon Rudnitsky, Jason Alexander, and Cazzie David. Some superb indies coming out this week and this might be the one I'm most excited for.
