๐Ÿ“บ The Media Guide S5E24

zombies, aliens, ghosts, lizards, sharks, and more

Good day to you friendly folks.

By the time the next Media Guide rolls around, the NBA Finals will have wrapped up. My Thunder in 5 pick obviously didn't hit, but I still feel pretty good about the Thunder being the better team and overcoming an injured Haliburton and the excellent coaching of Carlisle, which won Indiana the first game.

If you're looking for something new to read, you should check out future foofaraw collaborator, Alex Atkins' new story, Dark Work work over at MetaSellar.

Or you could go check out this killer camera app, mood.camera, which I recently stumbled across, through Gobino's blog. It makes for some really fun, low-stakes shooting.

what's new on tv this week

๐Ÿ“บ New shows

๐Ÿ‘‘ The Gilded Age S3 (HBO) โ€” 22 June

I never watched Downton Abbey, but I've become a huge fan of The Gilded Age through it's first two seasons and early reviews of S3 are saying this is the best season yet as things really start moving forward after the first two seasons really took their time.

๐Ÿ‘ฟ Hell Motel S1 (Shudder) โ€” 17 June

A new horror limited series from the creators of Slasher about some true crime fanatics who go to the site of a 30 year old satanic mass murder as a newly renovated motel opens up. It looks like the kind of show true horror heads would enjoy and it has Eric McCormack (Will & Grace) as one of the leads, who is always enjoyable on screen.

๐ŸŒŠ The Waterfront (Netflix) โ€” 19 June

This looks a little too soapy for me, but Holt McCallany (Mindhunter) is in it... It's basically Bloodlines meets Yellowstone, but if it was made for the CW...

last friday's best new albums

๐Ÿ’ฝ Release of the week

๐Ÿ–๏ธ Phantom Island by King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard

This might be KGLW most accessible album to date, but it's still a ton of fun with their typical delightful weirdness thrown in for good measure. I find KGLW to sound a bit repetitive at timesโ€”which is surprising given how much they like to experimentโ€”but Phantom Island has a great mix of melodies and song structures to really keep you engaged throughout the whole album.

๐Ÿƒ Runner-ups

๐Ÿ‘ค Very Human Features by The Bug Club

The Bug Club is The Bug Club. Up-beat simple and silly hooks to drive home another fun album. I especially loved the last song on the album, Appropriate Emotions. I honestly don't know what else to say about The Bug Club that I haven't said before. Their last album made our top ten albums last year and this is more of the sameโ€”which is a good thing in this case.

๐Ÿ—บ๏ธ Timeless World Forever by Graham Hunt

A little bit of Cage the Elephant meets Citizen Cope? Maybe with a little bit of some of the new age pop-rock a la Alex G or Dominic Fike? Overall it's a fun album that doesn't stick the landing perfectly when more downtempo tunes are thrown in, but still worth adding to the library and throwing on when you are in the right mood.

by this weeks best comic releases

๐Ÿฆธ No. 1's

๐Ÿ•ด๏ธ Benjamin (Oni)

Purely hear for the Christian Ward cover, but the story does sound good and comes from two creators who have done a decent amount of work for Oni's EC Comics imprint. I'm not even sure how to talk about the plot as it looks pretty wild, pscyhedelic and metaโ€”which is a great thing in my book. Plus it's a three issue, premium format series, which is an interesting way to dip their toes into the market.

โš”๏ธ They Choose Violence (AWA)

Another pretty killer looking cover, and from a group of creators I once again, have zero familiarity with. This one tackles race and systemic injustice as it follows three HBCU students who take justice into their own hands as they go after white supremacists murderers.

๐Ÿฆˆ Jeff the Land Shark (Marvel)

Who doesn't love Jeff?!

๐Ÿง™โ€โ™€๏ธ Bytchcraft (Mad Cave)

A queer coven set in modern day NYC during a permanent supernatural eclipse that has to fulfill a prophecy and save witch-kind. Wow.

movies hitting the big screen this week

๐ŸŽฅ New movies

๐ŸงŸ 28 Years Later

I haven't seen Days or Weeks so I'm obviously not the best person to talk about this new one, but I'm still excited about it. Danny Boyle and Alex Garland are back after taking the Weeks sequel off and apparently have plans for Years to be an entire trilogy in itself. No Cillian Murphy in this one, although it sounds like he's planned to be in the sequels if this one does well. But Ralph Fiennes looks fantastic in this behind the leads of Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Jack O'Connell. Plus Jodie Comer is in it.

๐ŸŽญ Everything's Going to be Great (Limited)

A little indie dramedy starring Bryan Cranston and Allison Janney, directed by Jon S. Baird (Tetris, Filth) and written by Steven Rogers (I, Tonya). It's the story of a suburban family that moves from Akron to Jersey to take over a small theater and their struggle to keep it from becoming a huge failure and losing everything. Early reviews look super promisingโ€”although it looks like it might be a bit on the sappy/sentimental side of things.

๐Ÿ‘ฝ Elio

The newest flick from Disney and Pixar, which, I haven't seen a Pixar film in years, but I am excited about them doing their first hand-drawn animation film soon.
