๐Ÿ“บ The Media Guide S5E23

internet radio, baby

This is one of those weeks where I'm not really feeling writing. That doesn't mean I've been sitting on my ass though. It's been a jam-packed week and it's only Tuesday. First, I'm in the middle of on-boarding Tony Tran as our Art Director so new art to accompany stories and other design details are imminent. Then, we received our podcast artwork from Hollowe Studios, which is gorgeous. Finally, I was commissioned to make a logo for someone, so all of my creative juices have been flowing into that.

On top of that, this week in new entertainment is pretty lackluster, so the motivation has just not been there. But the show must go on!

what's new on tv this week

๐Ÿ“บ New shows

๐ŸงŸ Revival S1 (Syfy) โ€” 12 June

Syfy: where cool comic books go to die as TV shows. Revival was an excellent and weird zombie mystery book from Tim Seeley and Mike Norton that ran for 47 issues, published by Image Comics. At it's core, Revival is a murder mystery. But within this small Wisconsin town, people start coming back to life, and although they aren't your traditional zombies, something is clearly off with them.

๐Ÿ’ฝ Release of the week

๐Ÿ“ฎ Greetings from Echo Park by Ryan Cassata

Singer-songwriter, but with an edge of punkiness makes this a really intriguing listen. It starts off with a bang and maybe never reaches those same heights, but it's an album that really warrants a close listen. And for those interested in the people behind the music, Ryan is trans and huge activist and supporter of LGBTQ+ rights, which we love around here, so go give it a listen and support Ryan's music.

๐Ÿƒ Runner-ups

๐ŸฆŒ Nostalgia by Mother Mother

I don't know anything about this band, but it sounds like they have three vocalists and each one is having an absolute blast on this record. Feels like a good mix of The Darkness and Cage the Elephant? A bit dirtier and grungier though.

๐Ÿช„ Magic, Alive! by McKinley Dixon

A young buck that can actually write lyrics and rap with flow? Scratch that. Just looked him up and he's 29. So it makes sense that he'd fall a bit more into that conscious rap with some jazzy elements thrown in. Still, it's a great listen.

by this weeks best comic releases

๐Ÿฆธ No. 1's

โš”๏ธ Gehenna: Naked Aggression (Image)

New book from Patrick Kindlon and Maaurizio Rosenzweig where it looks like they are taking the word "Naked" in the title literally as some of these variant covers are out there and one is even censored on the internet. That of course doesn't make it a good or bad book. The main cover brings a lot of style and the plot has some John Wick vibes to it as Gehenna has a contract on her head, manages to survive, and is now out to kill the contract from it's source.

๐Ÿฉธ Blood Type (Oni)

A new on-going and first ever serialized book from the EC Comics imprint, spinning out of Epitaphs From the Abyss, written by Corinna Bechko and drawn by Andrea Sorrentino, who trust me, is worth the price of admission.

โ˜‚๏ธ The Umbrella Academy: Plan B (Dark Horse)

Gerard Way and Gabriel Bรก are back with the first Umbrella Academy book since 2021, where the academy goes head-on against The Sparrows.

โšก The New Avengers (Marvel)

And out of Thunderbolts* comes the New Avengers, led by Bucky Barnes and Black Widow, with a supporting cast of Carnage, The Hulk, Namor, Clea, and Wolverine. Written by Sam Humphries with art by Ton Lima.

movies hitting the big screen this week

๐ŸŽฅ New movies

๐Ÿ‰ How to Train Your Dragon

This animation to live-action with CGI thing that's been happening in recent years is just weird. It's only been six years since the third animated movie was released! And now we are just remaking movies that are only 15 years old. Come on people, have some originality...

๐Ÿ‘— Materialists

A new rom-com from Celine Song, who previously made the well-regarded Past Lives in 2023. Reviews so far seem to be pretty solid for a rom-com as they've apparently "taken a different approach" to the genre. Plus it has Pedro Pascal, Dakota Johnson, and Chris Evans.

๐Ÿ”Š Echo Valley

This is a new movie for Apple TV coming out this weekend with a stacked cast of Julianne Moore, Sydney Sweeney, Fiona Shaw, Kyle MacLachlan, and Domhnall Gleeson. It's a thriller about a mother and daughter and a dark secret.
