πŸ“Ί New Shows

πŸ‘ͺ Good American Family (Hulu) β€” 19 Mar

I don't think I'm going to actually watch this as I'm getting some ABC Family vibes, but Mark Duplass is in it, so maybe it has a chance to be decent.

πŸ€ͺ Happy Face (Paramount) β€” 20 Mar

This is a docudrama about a 15yo girl who discovers her father is a serial killer. An interesting premise with an iffy cast, but Michael Showalter is directing an episode so that's one in the pro column...

πŸ•΅οΈβ€β™€οΈ The Residence (Netflix) β€” 20 Mar

A murder mystery from Shonda Rhimes and creator Paul William Davies that takes place at the White House and has an absolutely killer cast. I didn't go into this week thinking this was the show I'd be most excited about, but here we are. Starring Uzo Aduba as the eccentric detective lead, but also includes Randall Park, Giancarlo Esposito, Ken Marino, Jason Lee, Andrew Friedman, and Al Franken.

πŸ’½ Release of this Week

⚰️ Dead Channel Sky by clipping.

I've never been a huge clipping. fan, but this one really hit for me. Daveed Diggs is killer as always, but the beats and production feel like they've been elevated to a-whole-nother level here.

Current Favorite Track: Malleus

πŸ’½ Release of last Week

πŸ™… BS by Baby Said

Super fun, rhythmic rock album. At by rock, I mean it really has that feel of a "rock," not "indie rock," not "alternative," but "rock."

Current Favorite Track: Sweet Talk

πŸƒ Runner-ups

πŸ–οΈ This Side of the Island by Hamilton Leithauser

I was a huge fan of Leithauser's album with Rostam, "I Had a Dream That You Were Mine." With this new album, Leithauser goes significantly brighter. It doesn't quite hit the same highs for me, but it's still a delightfully joyful album.

CFT: Fist of Flowers

πŸŒ… Another Day in Paradise by SOFY

This is just a fun, pop record that probably isn't "poppy" enough to blow up and be huge, but it's really, really good and it deserves a few spins.

CFT: hush!

πŸ’ͺ We Could Be Brave by Michael Cera Palin

Boy oh boy does this bring me back to the emo days. I'm not sure an album has had this same emo rock feel in years. A bit of A Day to Remember meets Set Your Goals, but a tad easier going than that.

CFT: Murder Hornet Fursona

this weeks best comic releases

🦸 No. 1's

⚑ Absolute Flash (DC)

The terrific Jeff Lemire makes his return to the big two with artist Nick Robles to launch the fourth Absolute book following last years Batman, Wonder Woman, and Superman. Absolute Martian Manhunter and Green Lantern will be kicking off in the coming weeks too.

πŸ’‚ Out of Alcatraz (Oni)

Christopher Cantwell (Halt and Catch Fire) and the always wonderful Tyler Crook (The Lonesome Hunters) bring us a fun looking book about life on the run as escaped convicts from Alcatraz.

🚲 Adventureman: Family Tree (Image)

Matt Fraction and Terry Dodson are back with the third mini-series of Adventureman. I'm not sure there's much else to say other than two of the best creators continue to return to this book, so you should probably get on it.

🐱 ThunderCats: Lost (Dynamite)

After ThunderCats: Apex, the team of Ed Brisson and Rapha Lobosco are back with a new ThunderCats mini-series as five of the Cats work to escape the middle of the war zone they find themselves in.

movies hitting the big screen this week

πŸŽ₯ New Movies

πŸ‘Ύ Ash

Flying Lotus has been dipping his toes in Hollywood for awhile, with Yasuke being the latest as a writer, producer, and composer. Now he's hopping in the directors chair with Ash a sci-fi thriller starring Eiza GonzΓ‘lez and Aaron Paul. And Flying Lotus is of course doing the music as well. RogerEbert.com calls it "a B-movie operating at the highest levels of craftsmanship, intrigue, and performance," and honestly, that sounds awesome to me.

πŸ”« The Alto Knights

Honestly, I'm really tired of actors playing multiple characters in a movie. Robert DeNiro plays Vito Genovese and Frank Costello and is joined by Debra Messing in this mafia movie written by Nicholas Pileggi and directed by Barry Levinson.

πŸ“‹ The Assessment

Elizabeth Olsen and Himesh Patel play a couple hoping to have a child in a near future where resources are limited and the government controls who can reproduce. They have to go through an assessment with Alicia Vikander and things start to unravel.
