Read Sarina’s story, Hex support, on Foofaraw now!

Can you remember the first time you wrote a story that fit in this Devil’s Delight world?

The first short story I wrote in this world was “Worse Than a Devil.” I think it was the third story I ever sold, which was to Crossed Genres in 2011. It took years to sell my first couple of stories, and it was an excruciating process. And now, 14 years later, I have sold over 250!

What do you think would be different about yourself if you lived in a world like this with witches and devils, etc.?

I would definitely be a witch. But would I be a good witch or a bad witch?

Do you practice any dark arts?

I am a practitioner of the dark arts and... crafts. Ahem, I mean, I create art and crafts, but I wouldn’t call it dark. At least not unless it is Halloween art. And I do have some witch jars I sell at a couple local shops in and around the Eugene, Oregon area.

Which plan from Hex Support would you sign up for if given the opportunity?

Right now I need Hex Support to figure out why I can’t find the place to pour water into my new robot vacuum because it isn’t working like the Youtube videos demonstrate. That is the kind of Hex Support I need—magical tech assistance that solves common hardware and software related issues for my electronics. But would I give my immortal soul for that? Hmm. Maybe a small piece of it.

Has there ever been a time you felt like someone put a hex on you? Or a time you desperately wanted to put a hex on someone else?

Yes, and yes. I remember a time as a teenager that my energy levels were really low, and I felt in a funk but for no particular reason. It happened I had been trying out dowsing (divining with a Y-shaped or L-shaped rod) and experimenting with other esoteric activities—and hanging out with people with similar interests. Someone I knew who was intuitive said that the reason I was out of sorts was because someone or something was draining my energy, like an energy vampire. The intuitive friend psychically severed the connection. I did feel better afterwards, whether it was psychological or there had been some kind of energy vampire they had picked up on.

There are many times in my life that I have thought about hexing my enemies, however, in Wicca, Neo-Paganism, New Age traditions, there is a teaching that the energy out there will be returned, amplified by three. The idea of hexing someone and that returning three times as horrible is a gentle deterrent. In general, U believe in being a good person and strive to live my life that way. Wishing someone is treated as they treat others (enemies included) could be wishful thinking that karma will do better work than a hex, and it does circumvent the idea of an actual hex.

What book are you reading right now?

I just finished “The Book of Life” the third book of the Discovery of Witches series by Deborah Harkness. I am halfway through “The Shadow Glass” the third book in the Bone Witch Series by Rin Chupeco. Both are books about witches and I loved them! I am also listening to the audiobook of “Rebecca” by Daphne du Maurier, but is a long and slow intro and I keep putting it aside for books with supernatural themes.

Do you have anything you're currently working on that you'd like to share?

It is October, the time of year when the veil between worlds is the thinnest—and people want to read supernatural books. The current series I am publishing is:

The Hex Files with Felix Thatch

He’s snarky. He’s brilliant and knows it. He’s a wizard-magician disguised in human clothing.

When there are monsters to fight and paranormal mysteries to unravel, Felix Thatch is the Witchkin to call.

This is a spin-off series from the Womby’s School for Wayward Witches’ Series. It is a little more grim and character more morose than my other books, which are lighthearted mysteries.

The Womby’s series is, in part, inspired by real-life experiences teaching at-risk youth—and in part because I always wanted to be a witch teacher at Hogwarts.

Womby’s School for Wayward Witches Series

You think you know the world of magical boarding schools? Not from a teacher's perspective at a school for at risk youth.

I have over a hundred books up on Amazon. Dozens are related to the Womby’s series, but I also have a secondary world fantasy series and a steampunk in space series.
