s3e20—flying with the big guy, learning to swim with the fishies, while getting run over by a boat, and embracing my inner furious nature
I have to be honest... I'm not really feeling it this week... luckily most of our segments were lackluster to begin with. But be sure not to skip Sonic Vibrations as the music from Friday is pretty killer. Lots of good stuff there. And of course, the biggest release of the summer so far, Furiosa, hits theaters this week.
Other than that, you can probably use the time you usually spend with us catching up on some other stuff. Enjoy it.
The only new show worth talking about this week. There's also Evil S4 and Trying S4, but I don't really care about those. I haven't finished S1 of this one either, but it's something I continue to hear great things about and has me excited to finally catch up.
Really great soulful indie alternative record that came out of nowhere for me. Super poetic as you'll notice on the first track which is more spoken word than music, but it picks up while holding that moodiness and introduces more rock, jazz, and blues rhythms in it's short seven track, 30 minute runtime.
I'm sure you are already familiar with this one. I don't think this hit as hard for me as others. Eilish and co seemed to be trying to split the success of the first album with some of the more poppy elements of the second and landed somewhere in the middle that ended up feeling lackluster as it never really hit it's stride. I think I still prefer this over the last.
Big, upbeat, heavy alternative punk record. Came across this thanks to the fine folks at Public Announcement.
Quite a week for bits of food as both Crumbs and Crumb release albums. This was my preferred album of the two.
GUPPY follows suit with Crumbs here. A little happier and poppier, but still some fun indie rock.
And the Talking Heads tribute cover album.
I read a bit of this in the original DSTLRY preview comic and it was pretty great. I still don't love DSTLRY's digital platform thing, which I find pretty annoying, but you can never go wrong with Scott Snyder and Francisco Francavilla.
New book from a creative team I'm not familiar with, but it looks quite interesting...
I'm not really a Joe Casey fan, but this seems to be his big team book swing that fans of his previous work: Officer Downe, Dutch, Butcher Baker, etc. will most likely dig.
The second issue in the new arc for James Tynion IV's big book from Boom. Truly a historic week for Boom with this and many, many more cool things coming out.
If you aren't reading this or have never seen Jesse Lonergan's art in action, do yourself a favor and check it out. His art is so dynamic—musical, even, with the way he uses panels and lines to guide your reading in a way no other artist does.
Second issue of this Geoff Johns + Jason Fabok comic.
Artist Bruno Renaldo is back with Tom Taylor on Nightwing, marking it's return to one of the best big two books on shelves.
I feel like we don't talk about this one enough so I just wanted to highlight it again. The first two arcs were tons of fun and I'm looking forward to catching up a bit.
Including this one for fun to show the range Boom is really putting out right now. I'm not really familiar with Zac Thompson's work, but he is putting so much interesting looking stuff I just need to pick something up and finally check out his work.
One of my most anticipated movies of the year. By far. I was listening to The Town when Belloni was going back and fourth with someone about how summer movies would fare and they both were down on this. I kept thinking to myself, these guys are idiots. Early reviews are amazing and I think this will build on the good will from Fury Road and blow away the box office.
Not a huge Glen Powell guy, but Richard Linklater getting some dough to do something fun and upbeat with Netflix is pretty interesting to me. The action rom-com has been a huge genre for Hollywood since COVID and this is squarely in that lane.
That's it. Hopefully we will do better next week.
