too many murder related things coming out lately
s3e17 β hacking through jokes, overwhelmed with musical choices, four names are better than one, and a glowing indie
This is going to be a brief update as I've been sick for a few days and today is no exception. Hoping I'll be better soon to catch up and prepare some of the future issues.
Jeff Daniels stars in this show from David E. Kelley, based on a Tom Wolfe novel with Regina King directing three of the six episodes.
It's back! One of the best comedies on TV. If you haven't watched this, you should definitely check out the first two seasons and then hop aboard. It stars Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder, who has her own comedy special coming to HBO soon as well.
Picking up the pace a bit here as the season they are going to be covering here just wrapped this past weekend. The last season of the show kicked off in September. Reynolds and McElhenney also just bought into a Mexican league team.
Another animated Star Wars show for Disney+.
Upbeat British (sounding, at least) indie pop rock. There were three albums in the running for me this week, but this one hit the sweet spot in the Venn diagram of being lesser known and still upbeat and poppy enough to have mainstream appeal.
The big release of the week. I loved it. St. Vincent has such a unique sound and she continues that here, but brings in more rock sensibility on some tracks that make it a true standout.
Reminiscent of the Pop Punk days of All Time Low mixed with A Day To Remember. It traverses that high-pitched Cute is What We Aim For vibe with the throaty yelling of hardcore a bit too much to really appeal too broadly, but was still a great ride.
This is a bit too soft for me, but if it's your kind of thing, it's really a great album.
Sean Lewis is a really intriguing writer. I first discover him with his Saints series at Image that surprised me in a lot of different ways. He hasn't gone on to write much (if at all) for the big two, but he's continued to write unique Image books and has also been writing a lot in the world of Spawn. This, to me, his biggest creator-owned launch since coming on the scene and I hope it delivers.
Chip Zdarsky returns to the world of Blacksand with Kris Anka. Will be cool to see if they continue to push out miniseries in this world for years to come.
This is a collected edition of two issues that preceded the above in the Blacksand world from 2019.
Space Ghost!
I finally just picked up the first Barbaric trade. I've heard great things and it's the book that has basically lifted Vault into a real published.
What more can I honestly say about these two books that I've been yelling about for over 18 months now. They are both superb. You are hopefully already reading both at this point.
A24 indie supernatural horror starring Justice Smith and Brigette Lundy-Paine.
The big studio film of the week starring Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt. You've probably seen enough about this one.
Maya Hawke stars as Flannery O'Connor in this movie directed by Ethan Hawke. Reviews are middling.
Anne Hathaway in a rom-com for Amazon Prime.
The adaptation of the John Green book about a girl with extreme anxiety. I feel like watching this will put me in my own anxiety spiral.
Jerry Seinfeld with his feature film directorial debut, and he chose... this..? He's also out there complaining about "woke culture" ruining comedy...
That's it... apologies for the briefness. I hope to do better next week.
Stay sane and be kind,
