s4e19β€”an undead feeling to end a cold, dark night

Welcome back to another transmission of words about the stuff you can watch and read this week.

The star this week is the movie section with multiple smaller indie flicks from places like Neon and A24 that really have my interests piqued.

No music this week, but there are still some comics and tv shows to talk about so without further ado...

what's new on tv this week

πŸ“Ί New Shows

πŸ’€ Skeleton Crew S1 (Disney) β€” 2 Dec

New Star Wars Disney+ show... Jude Law is in it so that's at least a positive, but if I'm being honest, I'm super skeptical of this one...

πŸ•ŠοΈ Black Doves S1 (Netflix) β€” 5 Dec

Keira Knightley and Ben Whishaw star in this six episode mini-series from Netflix that combines the spy genre, romance, drama, and thriller. This one flew a bit under the radar, but I'm genuinely interested to see if this might actually break through once it's out.

πŸ™ Creature Commandos S1 (HBO) β€” 5 Dec

And then the first new DC thing to come out on a screen under James Gunn's leadership. Once again Amanda Waller is involved as she sets up a new team similar to the Suicide Squad, but of various creature like people in the DC universe. Plus it's animated. I don't think this will be a massive hit, but I still have a good feeling about it.

this weeks best comic releases

🦸 No. 1's

πŸ§’ Juvenile (Image)

A new mini-series from JesΓΊs Orellana about a world with a deadly virus that kills everyone it infects as the become an adult until some people start to get telekenetic powers instead and the powers that be do everything they can to prevent it.

πŸͺ™ Two-Face (DC)

New Two-Face book from Christian Ward. He's not drawing it, which is a bit of a bummer, but he's really been honing his writing over the last few years and he's joined by Fabio Veras on art.

β˜ƒοΈ Long Cold Winter (Mad Cave)

Don't Spit in the Wind previously put Stefano Cardoselli on my radar for his grungy, but bright art style and this time he's joined by one of his previous collaborators in Francesca Perillo as they tell a story about a world where the Earth becomes unbreathable and only the rich can afford oxygen generators.

πŸŒ‰ The Dusk (Scout)

I'm not quite sure about this book, but I find Alex Sugura an interesting writer and this is basically his take on Batman.

πŸˆβ€β¬› Thundercats: Apex (Dynamite)

A one-shot from Ed Brisson and Rapha Lobosco introducing a new character to the world of Thundercats.

πŸ§‘β€πŸŽ„ Dread the Halls (Image)

An anthology issue of Christmas horror stories to get the month of December started!

πŸŽ₯ New Movies

🎼 The End

From writer/director Joshua Oppenheimer who is known for his documentaries about killing comes a... musical...? Not only a musical, but a sci-fi, fantastical drama set at the end of the world as a wealthy family living in salt mines encounters someone new for the first time in decades. Oh! And it stars Tilda Swinton and Michael Shannon.

🐞 Nightbitch

Amy Adams appears to be bringing it once again for this film from NEON. Adams plays a stay-at-home mom alongside Scoot McNairy as things go off the rails and get surreal in this weird dark comedy horror.

πŸ“» Y2K

This one comes from the hilarious writer/director/SNL cast member Kyle Mooney, who previously wrote and starred in Brigsby Bear, which I adored. It looks like he's playing a smaller role in this teen comedy/horror about machines taking over on Y2K.

πŸ”ͺ Get Away

And lastly another new Nick Frost movie for 2024. He also wrote this one, which he hasn't done sine co-penning 2011's Paul. This one doesn't look quite as wild as Krazy House which he also starred in earlier this year, but does involve a family traveling to a remote island only to find themselves sharing it with a serial killer.
