Welcome back to The Media Guide. It's a bit of a quieter week overall, but we did have some great albums come out last Friday plus a couple new things under each banner that are worth checking out. We did, unfortunately, make a couple mistakes last week, so we will get into that first...
Tim Burton's sequel to the original Beetlejuice arrived on Friday. Not sure how I forgot this one, but Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, and Catherine O'Hara return for the sequel and are joined by Jenna Ortega.
The Perfect Couple is a new Netflix series that flew completely under my radar last week. Nicole Kidman and Liev Schreiber star in this 6 episode whodunnit that I've heard fairly positive things about thus far.
The Dude is back as an old kick-ass ex-CIA man. In this season Jeff Bridges and John Lithgow join forces to rescue his daughter. Season one found a way to capture the excitement of an action movie like Taken across the entire season. I'm excited to see if they are able to map that over to season two or if it starts to feel like it will drag out a bit.
Not the typical type of thing we highlight here, but I'm excited to see Roy Wood Jr. get his own show as they bring the BBC show to CNN. It's a comedic, contest news show. This feels like something that will be super difficult to get right, but if anyone can nail it, it's Roy Wood Jr.
Lots of fun, fuzzy guitar, strong and steady drums, and female voices playing off of each other in this punk-ish rock album that also brings some Spanish flair on a couple songs that really give it it's own vibe.
Favorite Tracks: Boom Boom Back, Superstar, Mala Vista, Coffee
This just feels right. It's got a classic, southern rock feel throughout that makes you want to move. I almost chose this one for the pick, but Viva Hinds just fits the foofaraw vibe a bit more.
I was a little worried after the first couple singles were released, but not only did the album deliver, those original singles really grew on me as I got to listen to them in context with the larger album. This goes even more southern than One of a Kind with some slacker guitar rock thrown in for good measure.
I'm really tired of featuring DSTLRY books so hopefully this is the last one. But I do think this one will be special if I get a chance to actually pick up a copy. Chip Zdarsky, David Brothers, and Marcus To bring us this new sci-fi thriller that plays with time.
Saladin Ahmen and MartΓn CΓ³ccolo launch the new Wolverine book under the From the Ashes era.
I didn't read the original Dead Eyes series, but Gerry Duggan is always worth checking out.
I don't know anything about this new book or the creative team, but the cover is pretty fun.
A fun little coming-of-age flick with a little twist. I'm always up for anything with Aubrey Plaza and while she seems like she might have a bit of a smaller role in this, she seems to add a nice quirky sentimentalness to this one.
James McAvoy stars in this eery and creepy flick alongside the Halt and Catch Fire duo of Mackenzie Davis and Scoot McNairy. It's been fun to see McAvoy stretch in roles like this and Split.
Well I just finished watching the presidential debate... I feel like it took years off of my life. Overall, I continue to be impressed with Kamala Harris and still hold onto some hope that she can hold off this crazy person from getting back into the White House.
As always, remember...
