s4e4—the ghosts in capes use their overpowering force and traps to truly drive you cuckoo
Things feel like they are starting to lighten up a bit more now that we are directly in the middle of summer. That means only one ne show and only one new #1 comic. On the TV side, it's, of course, an animated show. We here at foofaraw aren't huge animation nuts, but there just seems to be a lot of interesting, cool (and sometimes IP-based) stuff happening in that space.
I'm late today because I wanted to really give this weeks releases a proper listening. There were a lot of interesting and cool sounding records, but my goal is to be a bit more cut throat in what I include and limit myself here.
📺 New Shows
🦇 Batman: Caped Crusader S1 (Amazon) — 2 August
Our only new show this week and it's a doozy. I feel like we've been getting more animated stuff lately than usual. Not sure if this is just what happens in summer or not, but I thought I'd take note of it.
This is a series that I've been looking forward to for awhile now since Ed Brubaker wrote about being in the writer's room. A lot of awesome DC Comics and DC Animation talent on this one and I'm really hoping they can deliver on that promise.

💽 Release of the Week
👻 To the Ghosts by Cults
This is so good. Just listen to the opening track. That gruff guitar strum, the congas, the marimba, that bass line. And then the drums kick in just enough to move the track along.
And then they do the exact reverse on the second track with a minimal drum beat leading you into more excellent instrumentation and composition.
And we haven't even talked about Madeline Follin soft, ghostly, if you will, vocals throughout that pair beautifully over the instrumentation.
I wasn't super familiar with Cults before now so I looked them up on Wikipedia and it's a two person band. It makes perfect sense given the way everything layers and feels like such a singular experience.
🏃 Runner-ups
🍬 Enough of the Sweet Talk by Lime Cordiale
I really vibed with this album too. They have this sound that feels like it's borrowing from so many influences that I really dig. There's definitely some radio pop sounds coming throught that I can't quite put my finger on... maybe Kings of Leon? But mixed with Slightly Stoopid and Cisco Adler from Shwayze fame. It's a fun, summer pop rock record that pairs nicely with the bands name.
🚩 Red Mile by Crack Cloud
A Canadian band that brings some British alternative sounding vocals that are King Krule-esuq. Then throw in some Caleb Landry Jones and I think you end up with the pretty cool indie rock sound of Crack Cloud on Red Mile.
🤡 Allora by Ben Seretan
This album sounds exactly how the cover looks.
📝 And Some Others for Good Measure!
- Wobble by Black Market Karma
- Song and Dance by Joy Again
- The Neon Bewilderment by Half-Sister
🦸 No. 1's
🦞 X-Force (Marvel)
From the Ashes continues it's launch with the only new #1 book this week, X-Force, from Geoffrey Thorne (I'm not familiar with him, but he's been writing Green Lantern for the last year) and Marcus To (Excalibur).
It's an interesting creative team for a book that has a pretty solid history of rough and tumble creator getting to really play in that sandbox.
🦹 New Releases
🦭 Saga (Image) #67
The worlds most popular comic book is back after another 9 month hiatus. The excessive breaks have really ruined my rhythm with this book (I think I'm like 8 issues behind at this point), but I'm sure as soon as I catch up, I'll be eager for the next one.
🎩 The Department of Truth (Image) #24
Tynion has so many great active books at this point that even something like this feels underrated because of how much other great stuff he has coming out. This was the first book that really turned me on to his work and made me into a fan after being iffy on a few of his books like Detective and The Woods.
🦡 William of Newbury (Dark Horse) #3
The penultimate issue of Michael Avon Oeming's creator-owned mini-series from Dark Horse. He's also the artist on Galaxy of Madness that has it's second issue coming out this week from Mad Cave.
📝 Other Notable New Releases
- Ultimate Spider-Man (Marvel) #7
- The Immortal Thor (Marvel) #13
- Masterpiece (Dark Horse) #6
- House of Slaughter (Boom) #25
- Grommets (Image) #3
- Grim (Boom) #19
- Fantastic Four (Marvel) #22
🎥 New Movies
🪤 Trap
M. Night Shyamalan and Josh Hartnett team up for a movie that actually looks pretty fun. I wish they didn't give up the conceit in the trailer because just imagine how fun that would've been, but maybe there are additional Shyamalan twists to be revealed later on.
🕵️ The Instigators
And lastly, the new Doug Liman movie starring Matt Damon and Casey Affleck hit theaters for a week before it's streaming on Apple a week later.
That's it! I'm out of here so I can catch up on things and get the other wonderful work published on this here site.
Be kind and stay sane,
