s4e3—abbreviating time for the new world with mutants by the sea and old friends doing the expected
A doozy of a week.
Things are pretty limited when it comes to TV and Movies—although we still get some pretty huge releases here.
Music and Comics are a completely different story. I seriously tried to limit these as best I could to only the things that truly matter and yet, the lists still exploded.
📺 New Shows
🕥 Time Bandits S1 (Apple) — 23 July
This is the big one of the week. Taika Waititi's new show; this time for Apple. I have pretty high hopes for it after Our Flag Means Death met it's untimely death with a cancellation after season two. Joining Taika this time around is Lisa Kudrow (Friends, obviously) and frequent collaborator Jemaine Clement (Flight of the Concords).
🤴 The Dragon Prince S6 (Netflix) — 26 July
I'm way behind on this, but I know there's a lot of people who dig the Avatar stuff.
Tuesday
- Time Bandits (Apple) 1:1-2
Wednesday
- Presumed Innocent (Apple) 1:8
- Sunny (Apple) 1:4
Thursday
- Kite Man: Hell Yeah! (HBO) 1:2
Friday
- The Dragon Prince (Netflix) S6
Sunday
- House of the Dragon (HBO) 2:7
- Last Week Tonight (HBO) 11:18
💽 Release of the Week

If you've been paying any attention at all to the music we talk about here, you should already have a good feeling for what to expect. A raw, DIY punk/alternative rock debut that brings some nice melodies and some fast-paced rhythms. The opener "We'll Neva Die" and the fourth track, "Kinky," are both great places to start to get an idea for what this record sounds like.

🏃 Runner-ups
📆 may, 2024 by shmavana shmantos
This is a bit out of the norm for me, but this bubbly, indie, bedroom pop record is a ton of fun. I love the idea of an artist quickly releasing albums based on their journal entries from a month. I don't know if that's really what happened here, but the bedroom pop sound, the short songs, the journal entry naming convention, and overall vibes happening here make it all very cool. I can't wait to see what they do next.
🍽️ Second Dinner by slimdan
This was a new one and a surprise for me. It's reminiscent of Ben Gibbard (Postal Service, Death Cab for Cutie), but with a modern, Gen Z twist to it in the vain of Dominic Fike. Definitely worth checking out.
🌍 Bando Stone and the New World by Childish Gambino
Childish Gambino holds a dear place in my heart. Awaken, My Love! is an all-time great album for me. And there is a lot going on in this album. Plus the video for Lithonia is magical. I think this might be the type of album that improves as you listen more and really dig in. Maybe the upcoming movie helps make it into a fuller package as well.
🐕 Dr. Dog by Dr. Dog
This is typical Dr. Dog for me. Nothing wild and crazy, but I dig Dr. Dog and I digged Fat Dog.
🏡 Make it Feel Like the Garden by Eliza and the Delusionsals
Another fun album. This one is reminiscent of those late 90's // early aughts female singers with a little bit of an edge while still playing over some lighter backing rock. A good time overall, even if the album stretches out a bit too long.
And Some Others for Good Measure!
- In Green We Dream by Parlor Greens
- The Ravonettes Sing... by The Ravonettes
- Ancient//Future by Mourning [A] BLKstar
- The Aching Taste of Blue by clay pigeon
🦸 No. 1's
🐢 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (IDW)
The new era begins here. Jason Aaron (Scalped, Thor) writes and he's joined by the absolutely beautiful art of Joëlle Jones (Catwoman and so many stunning covers). Out of all the new licensed books with big name creators coming out recently (Transformers, Thundercats, etc.) I think this one has the potential to be the best out of the bunch given the firepower they are bringing here to a title that has already had a lot of success in recent years.
🦭 The Nice House by the Sea (DC)
The follow-up to Tynion and Bueno's amazing The Nice House on the Lake. If you didn't read that, go check it out. Immediately. One of the best things DC has put out in ages—and non-super hero. I expect much of the same here.
🪨 Epitaphs From the Abyss (Oni)
EC Comics (something I have no familiarity with) returns here via Oni with what looks like an incredibly exciting anthology series. Lots of fun horror here from an absolutely killer line-up of creators.
🔦 Hello Darkness (Boom)
Speaking of horror anthologies... Boom has their own with Hello Darkness, which once again, has a killer line-up of creators. We are basking in greatness when it comes to anthologies lately.
🔍 Search and Destroy (Fantagraphics) Vol. 1
This was a manga book published between 2019-2021 in Japan, inspired by Osamu Tezuka's Dororo and now being translated for the US market with Fantagraphics. I believe this will end up being three volumes.
🚬 Spawn Kills Every Spawn (Image)
There are way too many Spawn books coming out right now and we don't exactly need another one. But if there's going to be one, having the exuberantly creative John Layman (Chew) write one where Spawn kills a bunch of other Spawns isn't a bad direction to take.
💣 Supermassive (Image)
I'm way too far behind on Radiant Black and overwhelmed by the prospect of catching up, but for those who are on top of their shit, a new super crossover between those books is here once again.
⚔️ BRZRKER: A Faceful of Bullets (Boom)
Keanu!
🦹 Nemesis: Rogues' Gallery (Dark Horse)
A new Nemesis series. Weird seeing these released by Dark Horse now. But Nemesis is pretty awesome...

🎥 New Movies
🦡 Deadpool & Wolverine
I think Hollywood is clearing out the lane to avoid getting dunked on this weekend by Marvel's mega release.
What more really needs to be said about this one. Both Deadpool flicks have had killer box offices. The second was pretty lame... but now we have Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool finally joined by Hugh Jackman's Wolverine. And they brought in Reynolds' boring guy Shawn Levy to direct it...
I'm sure it'll still be a ton of fun having those two share the screen together as these characters, but I'm not expecting much else from this one—even if the entire world is excited for it.
Whew! Wrapped this one up just in time. This week might be a bit more sporadic, but we still have some exciting stuff in store for the week.
For those who made it this far, I figured I'd share a little fun app project I'm working on with a friend of mine. Still a long way to go, but you can check it out here to get a sense of what we are building.
Be kind and stay sane,
