by Ken Kakareka

we have
this idea
of the
perfect arc
of life
on which
we sail
majestically
into a
sun-soaked
salvation.

we think
we have
time to be
messy
while
young.

we think
we have
time to become
our greatest
selves
with age.

but this
is not
true.

life
can be
ripped away
from us
like the rip
of a band aid—
instantly.

so we
shouldn’t
wait to work
on becoming
our greatest
selves.

we should
start
instantly.
