s4e2โ€”death comes from above with obligations and paranoia twisted into the strangest things

It's only the second issue of the season and we are already a day late! I've been lost in the clouds working on a fun, new project. I haven't been able to focus on anything else right now; it's been all-consuming during every waking second. It's safe to say I'm excited about it. But that's neither here nor thereโ€”we are here to talk about all the wonderful things this week and the music releases on Friday were stacked!

Let's get to it!

what's on tv this week

๐Ÿ“บ New Shows

๐Ÿ’ Hit-Monkey S2 (Hulu) โ€” 15 July

I have to admit, I didn't watch the first seasonโ€”I watched the first two episodes, I think, and then kind of forgot about it. I wasn't entirely impressed, even if I heard good things about it. Hoping the people that dug it are excited for this to land.

๐Ÿ—ก๏ธ Those About to Die S1 (Peacock) โ€” 18 July

Sir Anthony Hopkins is now on a Peacock show. He is joined by Iwan Rheon, who you will recognize for his role on Game of Thrones as the massive prick, Ramsay Bolton. Based on the trailer, it really looks like the money is on the screen and they are trying their hardest to find their huge epic with this one. It'll be fun to see if it can deliver.

๐Ÿช Kite Man: Hell Yeah! S1 (HBO) โ€” 18 July

Harley Quinn is one of the only DC properties that's any good so seeing Kite-Man get his own spin-off is absolutely delightful. I love the idea of having more of a focus on the henchman at the bar Kite-Man apparently owns a la Cheers. I expect this to be just as good as Harley Quinn.

this past Friday's best album releases

๐Ÿ’ฝ Release of the Week

๐ŸฆŒ Contractual Obligations by Deer Tick

I went back and fourth and back and fourth this week. I felt like there were so many worthy albums to pick from that I just decided to go with the first one that struck a chord for me (pun not intended). 8 songs across 30 minutes in the indie-alternative vibe with a little bit of folksiness added in for good measure.

๐Ÿƒ Runner-ups

๐Ÿฎ My Light, My Destroyer by Cassandra Jenkins

I think this is the "best" album of the week, but it didn't quite give me the pick-me-up I was looking for this week. While there is some fuzziness to it, it's a much more mellow album with a lot of beautiful lyrics. Feels a bit like a fuzzy and galactic Alex G.

๐Ÿšช Passage Du Desir by Johnny Blue Skies (Sturgill Simpson)

I'm not a country person. Nor am I a Sturgill Simpson fan. Well until now. I wasn't even going to listen to this until I saw some rock fans mention it and then heard NPR talk about how he seems incapable of doing albums that aren't concept albums as well as his anime-inspired rock(ish) album. So I gave it a go and enjoyed it quite a bit.

๐Ÿ˜ƒ Big Ideas by Remi Wolf

This was the big, fun pop album of the week and it delivered. This was the last of the four I seriously considered as my favorite of the week and if you are a big pop fan, this probably was your favorite of the week.

๐Ÿ”ˆ Vol. III by Webbed Wing

The most conventional indie rock album of the week, which is really my lane. Yellowcard meets Jeff Rosenstock, maybe?

๐Ÿคธ The Auditorium, Vol. 1 by Common and Pete Rock

I mean, it's Common. The lyrics, that voice. This man could turn the phone book into poetry and I'd give it a go.

๐Ÿงฟ Charm by Clairo

I haven't had a chance to spend as much time with this record as I would've liked. I've never really gone deep on Clairo, but I really enjoyed my first listen through this one.

๐Ÿš Seashell Angel Lucky Charm by Armlock

If Alex G tried to make a more mainstream rock sound? It doesn't quite deliver on the highs of that, but a lot of the sound feels inspired by the likes of All Time Low mixed with the indie weirdness of an Alex G type.

And Some Others for Good Measure!

this weeks best comic releases

๐Ÿฆธ No. 1's

๐ŸŒฟ Paranoid Gardens (Dark Horse)

Gerard Way (Umbrella Academy, singer of My Chemical Romance) is back with his first creator-owned book in a pretty long time (I think) after managing his own cool line of books at DC that I don

๐Ÿฆ… Phoenix (Marvel)

The X-Men relaunch continues here as is Jean Grey/Phoenix. I've really enjoyed a lot of the books Stephanie Phillips has written, most notably, her book from Boom!, Grim, and her fantastic run on Harley Quinn.

๐Ÿญ Biker Mice From Mars (Oni)

I was obsessed with Biker Mice from Mars as a kid (even if they were technically a little before my time), but I devoured it. There were a bunch of these weird TMNT (knock-offs?) abound in the late 80's so I caught their tale end growing up and am stoked to pick this up knowing nothing else about it.

๐Ÿ”‹ The Powerpuff Girls (Dynamite)

This one actually came out around the time I was growing up. I wasn't obsessed with it like I was BMfM, but I was familiar enough. Might be a weird thing to pitch here, but I'm genuinely interested to see what Kelly Thompson can do with the property.

โ˜ƒ๏ธ Dark Knights of Steel: Allwinter (DC)

Tom Taylor continues his Dark Knights of Steel line at DC with Allwinter that is also part of the DC Elseworlds Relaunch.

๐ŸŸ Namor (Marvel)

I wouldn't normally pay attention to a Namor book, but Jason Aaron is writing. I'm hoping he's a bit reinvigorated now that he is done with The Avengers and had another successful creator-owned book.

movies hitting the big screen this week

๐ŸŽฅ New Movies

๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘ฆ Dรฌdi

I don't actually know why this was already on my radar, but it was. So I was excited when it popped up and I realized it was coming out this week. Kind of gives me mid-90's (Jonah Hill's skater kid, coming-of-age directorial debut) vibes, but for a kid growing up with immigrant parents.

๐ŸŒช๏ธ Twisters

The big release that I'm sure everyone already knows about. I have almost zero interest, but the fact Lee Issac Chung (Minari) is directing gives me a little bit of home it won't become a complete missโ€”like most sequels.

๐ŸŽธ Scala!!!

Pretty killer looking doc British rock 'n' roll doc.

๐Ÿงน Oddity

This isn't going to deliver with the likes of Longlegs, but if you are looking for a competent horror flick this week, I'm confident this will deliver for you.

๐Ÿพ Widow Clicquot

And lastly, since my wife works in wine, this flick about the Veuve Clicquot champagne family and business. (My wife says we shouldn't like this champagne brand thoughโ€”I don't remember why...)

And that's a wrap for the week! We have a new short story going up on the site today and it'll be live before this even lands in your inbox.

Hope you have a great week; we'll talk soon.

Be kind and stay sane,
