🚚 Trailer of the Week

⚽ Netflix will stream the Women’s World Cup in 2027 and 2031 /// The Verge

The 2027 edition of the tournament will take place in Brazil, while the following World Cup doesn’t yet have a host nation. The Netflix coverage in the US will include both English- and Spanish-language broadcasts, and the streamer says that it will be creating more coverage in addition to the live matches

What a huge get for Netflix. I'm stunned they were able to pull it out and I feel like this wasn't talked about enough when it was announced. The World Cup, and the women's in particular, since the US women are actually good, seems to be the one time people in the US actually care about soccer—plus, at least in 2027, it will be in a timezone where Americans can watch live. Add in the three-header monster of an attack with Rodman, Smith, and Swanson, there is guaranteed to be a lot of buzz—and the oldest, Swanson, will still just be 32 during the 2031 World Cup.

ESPN+ has Bundesliga and La Liga, Peacock has Premier League, Paramount has Champions League and Serie A, and Apple has MLS—I guess since the US is a newer and smaller market for soccer, the stakes have been a bit lower for regular broadcast and cable channels to worry about, but the World Cup feels like one they let slip through the cracks by mistake.
