The Thursday Edition

Welcome back to the first RoL in way too long. I've been working on a lot of things in the background here—moving hosts, adding ads, another membership tier, plus a new newsletter and maybe even some audio components soon. I'm also looking into increasing the frequency and updating the formatting for Below the Fold to make it easier to read through.
But for now, here's a jam-packed issue.

🚚 Trailer(s) of the Week
So many good trailers from the last couple of weeks that I couldn't hide any of these behind the paywall!

🤖 Natasha Lyonne is directing a movie powered by generative AI
Lyonne is teaming up with technologist and virtual reality pioneer Jaron Lanier to produce a new sci-fi film that will feature elements generated by AI models. Titled Uncanny Valley, the feature will tell the story — which Lyonne co-wrote with The OA’s Brit Marling — of a teenage girl whose life is turned upside down by a popular virtual reality game.
I obviously don't love this. While it's neat that this AI is trained on 100% licensed content, it doesn't change the fact you are eliminating a human aspect of creation in special effects and the CGI artists who fine tune every detail. In the end, it just feels like a cost-cutting measure rather than a way to utilize a new tec'hnology to tell a story—and one that produces lower quality outputs, at that. Im a huge fan of Natasha Lyonne though, so ultimately, I have mixed feelings. At this point, I think we need to hold out hope they will make something that doesn't compromise and still has a human touch to it. But I won't be holding my breathe.
